The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), seeks to identify an outstanding Director to lead its NIH Intramural Sequencing Center (NISC) within its Division of Intramural Research (DIR; see ), located in Rockville, Maryland. NISC is a nationally recognized state-of-the-art, trans-NIH genome sequencing center that produces more than 50 trillion bases of DNA sequence data per month (and that number will continue to grow). It brings together diverse and unique scientific expertise to perform state-of-the-art genome sequencing and sequence analysis for basic and translational research projects. In addition to providing investigators at the NIH access to well-established, high-throughput DNA sequencing capacity, NISC works closely with NIH collaborators to explore the use and implementation of leading-edge genomics technologies, molecular biology protocols, and analytical procedures.

This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity to oversee a state-of-the-art, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)-certified, high-throughput DNA-sequencing facility consistent with NHGRI's mission and strategic objectives, including the Institute's renewed commitment to improving the diversity of the genomics enterprise (2020 NHGRI Strategic Vision )). The NISC Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of this large, well-respected, and highly productive center that is vital to many research projects at NHGRI and other NIH institutes/centers. In addition, the NISC Director serves as an important advisor and consultant on all aspects related to large-scale DNA sequencing, interacting extensively with intramural investigators across the NIH as well as NIH leadership, and managing a ~$6-8M annual budget and a diverse staff of ~25 scientists. The NISC Director is responsible for creating and maintaining a nurturing research environment that encourages creativity and collaboration among scientists from different disciplines; the efficient administrative management of its resources; and partnering with the NHGRI and NIH investigators and staff.

This premier research enterprise requires that the NISC Director is internationally recognized, highly collaborative, and an accomplished genomics researcher. Preferred candidates will possess expertise and experience in the fields of genomics, genetics, bioinformatics, and/or molecular biology; expertise in both long and short-read sequencing technologies; a well-recognized track record of leading successful genomics research projects; and an extensive publication record in large-scale genomics. In addition, applicants must be able to effectively lead and coordinate interdisciplinary research efforts involved in large-scale genomics projects; have extensive expertise planning and conducting large-scale, complex research projects involving the application of novel genomic technologies; and outstanding leadership skills to effectively lead a large research program.
