Responsible for supporting the overall purpose of the Advocate Health Ethics Program: We provide ethics expertise and resources to help people live well. At the direction of Ethics Program leadership, the Ethics Fellow participates in ethics consultation, education, policy development, and research projects to help achieve Ethics Program goals. The Ethics Fellow works under the guidance of the Clinical Ethicists to support specific ethics quality improvement projects at varying sites across more than 30 hospitals and service lines across Advocate Health Midwest Region. Key responsibilities include developing ethics consultation skillset, offering ethics education opportunities to team members, and contributing to ethics policy development.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Under the guidance of the Clinical Ethicists, gain the skills to become competent in responding to ethics consultation requests. Assess medical facts, patient issues, and contextual factors through review of documentation and interviews caregivers and patient/surrogate decision makers. Assist with identifying the ethical values held by the individuals related to the case, including the patient's basic moral framework, values, and preferences, as well as analyzes ethical principles pertinent to cases. Mediates and helps resolve communication issues, conflicts or dilemmas among care team members, patients, family members, and/or surrogate decision makers. Documents consult notes in the electronic health record and reviews feedback for quality improvement.
  • Works in collaboration with members of the Ethics Program to prepare for ethics education offerings for ethics committee chairs and members, care team members, patients and families, and communities. Duties may include conducting literature reviews, research, assembling presentations, and preparing interactive educational content using new technologies.
  • Participate in ethics-related policy development at the direction of Ethics Program leadership or designee. Duties may include doing research, taking notes, drafting policy language, and working with others to craft communication and education plans.
  • Under the direction of the Ethics Program leadership, gain exposure to organizational ethics issues in health care through exploration of values conflicts with leaders in different departmental areas. Assist Ethics Program leaders with the development and use of organizational ethics discernment tools and analyses.
  • Support Vice President, Ethics and Director, Ethics in fulfillment of responsibilities. Support Clinical Ethicists in their responsibilities to ethics committees, care team members, patients, families, and communities.
  • Provide as needed support to other strategic initiatives, such as the Ethics Chairs Steering Committee goals and priorities, Ethics Committees, Ethics Service Lines, Ethics Education Working Group, Ethics Policy Working Group, and others.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • None Required.

Education Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health Care Ethics or related field.

Experience Required:

  • No experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills with demonstrated ability to handle sensitive situations and communications.
  • Excellent listening and comprehension skills.
  • Understanding of logic and how emotions, beliefs, and moral standards interact.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to be objective.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office or similar products.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Exposure to normal office environment.
  • May be exposed to normal hazards while in the health care facility environment.
  • The position requires travel and therefore there is exposure to weather and road conditions.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
