About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The Instructional Technologist will work with the Perkins School of Theology in order to develop online materials in Canvas, the Learning Management System, and to coordinate the completion of accessibility elements with faculty and student workers. Working with faculty to develop a blueprint of the course, this person would then build the course and add all the engaging elements that provide a student-centered and authentic online learning experience for students at Southern Methodist University. In addition, this person will assist the faculty in making and editing video content for the course. This is a 12-month position requiring full-time in-office hours.

This position reports to the Manager of Online Production Services.

Essential Functions:
  • Work with OPS Manager and faculty to revise existing courses for online delivery and Spanish language sections. Create instructional material: courses, curriculum, video content, student guides or training manuals.
  • Work with OPS Manager and faculty to design and implement innovative and effective online learning techniques.
  • Coordinate efforts with and report progress regularly to course production project manager(s) and other leadership. Update documents for tracking and reporting purposes.
  • Advise, train and support faculty on the elements used in Canvas to achieve course learning objectives as defined by course production project manager(s) and faculty.
  • Assist team with developing appropriate assessments, discussions, and strategies to align with course learning objectives as defined by faculty.
  • Ensure all content of the course is accessible and adheres to QM standards
  • Coordinate activities alongside faculty throughout each course's development life-cycle to the course production project manager(s) to ensure that deadlines are realized.
  • Assisting with the copying of course content into new course shells, into new terms, and/or into Spanish language sections. Expected to develop professional proficiency and to leverage common SMU instructional technologies as defined by course production needs.
  • Perform basic video editing tasks and loading video content into Panopto, our video repository, and Canvas pages.
  • Perform regular course accessibility checks according to institutional quality/compliance/accreditation requirements.
  • Maintain awareness updates to Canvas, new techniques and related technology tools.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree is required. A degree in Instructional Design or Learning Experiences is preferred.

A minimum of three (3) years of experience is required.

Two years of demonstrated experience in an academic or training environment in the building of course content for online delivery, including course modules, web resources, and other digital course materials is required. Three years of experience in Learning Management Systems is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

Candidate familiarity with learning management systems (eg Canvas) and other common instructional technologies is required.

Candidate ability to skillfully use various audio and video technologies (video cameras, webcams, wireless mics, etc.) is essential.

Candidate familiarity with modern quality rubrics (eg. Quality Matters) is also necessary.

Candidate ability to speak/write in Spanish is a plus.

Candidate knowledge of Canvas, Zoom, non-linear video editing software, and audio editing software is required, as well as knowledge of emerging technologies as related to teaching and learning.
