The Assistant Nurse Manager of Loyola Medicine's GI Labs is a registered professional nurse, conversant with the nursing process, who has accountability when the nurse manager is not present. The assistant nurse manager will support the nurse manager in developing long term planning, human and fiscal resources in a designated patient care area. They are responsible for complying

with all regulatory groups to ensure safe, ethical and quality patient/family centered care.

The Assistant Nurse Manager promotes behavior that aligns with Trinity Core Values and supports various health system-sponsored programs. This is a regional Assistant Nurse Manager role which will have oversight of LUMC, GMH and MNH GI Labs.

Position Responsibilities:

Operations:

  • Operationalizes the organization's mission, philosophy, operating principles, model of care, and strategic plans/goals.
  • Participates in developing, implementing and evaluating the annual department goals and objectives in alignment with the mission, philosophy, operating principles, model of care and strategic plans/goals.
  • Ensures ongoing compliance with accreditation, regulatory, and professional standards impacting the clinical area.
  • Ensures staff knowledge and participation in quality improvement activities, including but not limited to The Joint Commission's core measure projects, National Patient Safety Goals initiatives, and NDNQI goals; evidenced-based projects and research activities (as delegated by the manager).

Safety:

  • Participates in the bi-annual review of all unit-specific policies/procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and evidenced based practice.
  • Communicates current professional nursing standards that reflect standards of care for specific patient populations.
  • Participates in house-wide quality and safety indicators and evidenced-based projects and establishes unit specific quality indicators.
  • Establishes unit based evidenced-based projects/research projects as appropriate.
  • Utilizes the patient safety communication system, identify opportunities for improvement and lead/participate in initiatives to improve quality and safety.
  • Demonstrate improvement in the quality and safety of patient care through an interdisciplinary unit-based committee/mechanism, which monitors the effectiveness/appropriateness and outcomes of patient care.

Staffing:

  • Ensures qualified staff to meet patient/family care needs.
  • Participates in recruiting, interviewing and selecting staff in collaboration with the nurse manager, Human Resources, staff and the multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
  • Develops and maintain staffing guidelines.
  • Ensures accuracy and timeliness of patient classification data or other primary workload statistics.
  • Provide educational opportunities for staff related to age-specific and developmentally appropriate patient care.
  • Provides care as needed by the unit.
  • Promoting the nursing process, by ensuring clinical competence and service orientation of staff through effective and diverse teams.
  • Collaborates with nursing education to provide comprehensive unit-specific orientation programs and yearly competency training.
  • Facilitate/support opportunities for continuing education including in-services, seminars, conferences, and national certification.
  • Utilizes interdisciplinary resources for staff development.
  • Communicates and ensures compliance with Medical center and unit policies. Provides timely and constructive feedback related to all aspects of performance.
  • Conducts coaching and counseling for performance improvement and succession planning.

Patient Care:

  • Ensures that operations, systems and processes are streamlined to provide seamless, ethical, efficient delivery of patient/family centered care.
  • Participates in departmental activities collaboratively with other disciplines and departments including multidisciplinary rounding.
  • Identify and address opportunities for improvement in processes through point of service monitoring, problem solving, and shared decision-making.
  • Champions, supports, develops, and implements evidenced-based innovations and monitors and evaluates appropriately.
  • Authorize purchases and maintain inventories for optimal unit function. Monitor and address environmental and physical conditions of unit/service area(s) to maintain a safe and clean environment for patients, families, and staff.
  • Ensures operation and maximize utilization of available computerized systems.
  • Cultivates an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust and foster successful partnerships with the administrative director, unit medical director, health care team, other organizational units and the community.
  • Empowers staff to improve operations and solve problems and encourage their participation in the shared decision-making process/unit/house-wide councils/committees.
  • Ensures confidentiality of all patient and staff information.
  • Conducts all business in an ethical manner and follow corporate compliance guidelines.

Customer Service:

  • Ensures that service expectation of internal and external customers and colleagues are met or exceeded.
  • Identifies customers for the work environment including patient/families, physicians, students, and payers.
  • Develops and implements strategies to assess, improve, and monitor customer satisfaction of all customers including the healthcare team (i.e., management by walking around, regular patient/family rounding).

Finance:

  • Ensures capital, salary, and non-salary expense budgets correlate with patient care needs.
  • Ensures revenue is maximized.
  • Participation in the development, implementation and monitoring of budgets.
  • Participation in the development, implementation, and evaluation of initiatives to enhance operational effectiveness in such areas as: staffing, supplies, equipment, and needs for patient care.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of, initiatives to enhance operational revenues and expenses.

Management:

  • Engages and demonstrates in self-development in clinical, professional, and assistant managerial areas. Identify personal and professional learning needs. Set specific goals to meet these needs.
  • Collaborates with the nurse manager/administrative director and service line team members to meet these needs.
  • Attends at least 16 hours of educational opportunities per year.
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of a strategic plan for the service line or department as directed by administrative director/supervisor.
  • Enhances employee satisfaction regarding regular and timely communication with staff by holding regularly scheduled staff meetings as delegated by the nurse manager.
  • Being open and responsive to staff issues and complaints.
  • Being available for all shifts. Giving clear instructions.
  • Utilizing technology to support communication with staff.

Minimum Education:

  • Associate degree in nursing required; Bachelor's degree preferred.

Minimum Experience:

  • 1-2 years of previous job-related experience required; 3-5 years preferred.
  • 1-2 years designate/charge nurse experience is preferred.
  • Managerial experience not required.

Licensure/Certifications:

  • Current Registered Nurse License State of Illinois required.
  • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
  • Other: Specialty certification in a clinical or functional area of nursing granted by a national nursing organization is preferred.
