This position requires a dynamic individual who demonstrates a passion for organizing, preserving, and promoting the unique materials that support the teaching, learning, and research objectives of the university and the community. The successful candidate will lead the university library's efforts in building special collections and rare books; collaborate with unit colleagues to shape the Archives' online presence; and market collections and services to the FGCU community and the public.

Job Description

Typical duties include but are not limited to:
  • Acquire and manage special collections materials, including rare books, manuscripts, archives, and other unique resources.
  • Appraise potential additions to the collection and make recommendations for acquisition of new collections and de-accessioning of existing collections.
  • Facilitate user access by providing reference services, managing reading room hours, and overseeing the circulation of special collections materials.
  • Implement and oversee preservation and conservation measures to protect the integrity of special collections materials while also ensuring accessibility to the collections.
  • Promote collections through exhibits, publications, presentations, instructional sessions, and by cultivating partnerships with campus and external organizations, such as libraries, historical societies, museums, and archives to enhance the visibility and impact of special collections.
  • Collaborate with faculty, researchers, community members and organizations to acquire, preserve, and provide public access to special collections materials.
  • Engage in relevant professional activities as a library faculty member including maintaining professional knowledge and skills through continued education, research, scholarship, and service.
  • Engage in continuous improvement activities including assessment, analysis and planning of the department's resources and services to ensure they adequately and appropriately achieve the university mission.
  • Hire and manage student staff to process collections and assist in exhibitions.
Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in library science or equivalent from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience as a special collection's librarian or similar position.
  • Demonstrated scholarly contribution, knowledge, and service required for the rank of associate university librarian.
  • Experience in archival principles, rare book cataloging, and preservation.
  • Experience with digital initiatives and digitization projects.
  • Experience curating exhibitions using special collections materials.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in fundraising and grant writing.
  • Demonstrated experience in acquiring and preserving important and historically significant special collections.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of best practices of ensuring representation, a sense of belonging, and removing barriers in library services and collections for all members of the communities we serve.
  • Knowledge of professional initiative and flexibility required for successful teamwork in an academic library environment.
  • Knowledge of the use of technology in distance learning and university teaching.
  • Knowledge of relevant cataloging and metadata standards, such as MARC, DACS, DublinCore, METS, and/or MODS.
  • Ability to collaborate both within and outside the university to develop key partnerships.
  • Ability to work effectively with and provide library services to a various academic community.
  • Ability to value and engage in continued scholarship and service to the university, community, and librarianship.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and outreach skills.
