University Counselor I/II

Essential functions (job duties):

The University Counselor I/II – College to Career Specialist will play a critical role in supporting and empowering students to launch and achieve their career readiness goals. Through individual counseling sessions, the specialist will guide students in a variety of career related and student development practices including self-discovery and reflection, understanding the world of work, experiential learning, tapping into their social network, advanced education, on-campus employment, and the transition to part time or full-time employment. This student-centric role will carry out the social mobility mission of Wayne State University and Career Services as students transition from college to their career. In partnership with the Director of Career Services, the University Counselor-College to Career Specialist will play an instrumental role in organizing workshops, fostering collaboration with the departments in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Fine Performing and Communication Arts and other Schools and Colleges as well as facilitate engagement among faculty, student organizations, and other members of the campus community.

The University Counselor I/II will utilize knowledge of career theories, current research, and best practices in the knowledge domains of student development, student learning, decision making, learning styles, social identity development, leadership, identity development, counseling processes, evaluation tools, social media/AI tools, and job/internship search processes. The University Counselor I/II will use the Wayne State University Prosperity Agenda, developed by the President, as a guiding principle in their work with students.

Responsibilities:

Career Counseling/Coaching- 50%


•Provide career coaching which aligns with the College to Career Initiative: Work one-on-one with students to develop career plans, set goals, and create strategies for success.


•Help students identify their strengths, interests, skills, and professional values. Encourage students to understand the importance of self-knowledge to successfully translate their educational experiences into career choices that are impactful to them. Assist students in developing the lifelong learning skills to manage their careers after graduation.


•Encourage connections to experiential learning opportunities including student organization participation, community service, internships, and research.


•Use and have knowledge of Handshake as a recruiting tool platform to connect students with placement opportunities, as well as to access resources like workshops, recruiting events, and career fairs.


•Develop interesting ways of bringing the world of work to the students to help inform their thinking and develop clarity in their planning.


•Use current technology such as LinkedIn and Gen AI to demonstrate to students how to incorporate these tools to their advantage. Stay abreast of the full range of tools available to students as technology evolves.


•Support students to be successful in the implementation of their job/educational choices through resume development and interview skills, use of on and off-campus job search strategies, social media connections, employer/school selection, and job offer negotiation.


•Promote the highest standards of the profession in accordance with the principles, ethics, and standards of NACE, Midwest ACE, ACPA, NASPA, and established good practice in Student Affairs.

Workshop Facilitation and Events- 15%


•Create and present interactive programs/workshops on topics such as career readiness success, career exploration, and job search strategies for diverse student audiences in the Schools and Colleges.


•Utilize technology and presentation/facilitation best practices to engage audience and ensure workshop objectives and learning outcomes are met.


•Facilitate small group dialogues around identified career topics, demonstrating sound facilitation and group leadership skills.


•Support Career Service programming such as Career Fairs, Career Treks, Etiquette Dinners, etc.

Program Management- 20%

Assist and Support Student Programming:


•Collaborate with campus partners who request workshops for their students/organizations Lead out logistics of programming request process.


•Assist with management of Career Ambassadors and support professional staff with requested collaborations to enhance the College to Career student journey.


•Strategize programming for the office to promote career readiness across campus by working with units like University Advising Center, Academic Success Center, Learning Communities, Office of Multicultural Student Engagement, Dean of Students, student organizations, student groups, and employers/alumni.


•Maintain accurate records of Career Services programming and attendance. Analyze data for trends and report out programming data at the end of each semester.


•Supervise at least one student assistant.


•Support 3rd party software and tools.

Data Management- 15%


•Maintain accurate and timely records and statistical information on clients using Handshake and additional tools.

Maintains regular office hours per an approved schedule. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Career Services.

The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.

Qualifications:

Bachelors degree for University Counselor I

Master's degree for University Counselor II.

Both degrees should be in education, Student Affairs, counseling, psychology, or a related field which includes the broad-based study of theory and research in career and student development, counseling, social identity, student learning, multicultural counseling.

Minimum 1-year experience in career counseling, student advising, or student support services.

Experience utilizing current technology, social media, and information management tools for creative service delivery.

Experience presenting/facilitating/teaching small and large groups of students, demonstrating strong verbal communication skills.

Broad understanding of the world of work and industry/economic

Preferred qualifications:


•Experience working in a fast-paced office environment.
•Experience with administration and interpretation of career assessment tools/tests (ex/ SII, MBTI, CliftonStrengths)
•Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
•Experience with a variety of student populations on campus including undecided students, first-generation students, veterans, students with disabilities, first-year students, and international students.
•Demonstrated experience communicating effectively with students, parents, employers and colleagues (groups and 1:1) in person and virtually.
•Strong interpersonal skills (advising skills, collaboration, etc.) with clients, a diverse student body, and colleagues.
•Strong organization and ability to accomplish multiple tasks efficiently.
•Innovative, creative, and ready to jump into new ideas and projects to support students' college to career journey at an urban public research institution.
•Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours for department and University related events.
