The Director of Human Resources will serve an active role in helping to formulate and execute the talent management work of the school and play a pivotal role in overseeing all aspects of human resources management.

This position will play a critical role in guiding the school on all aspects of talent management including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, professional development, performance evaluation and the management of payroll, benefits administration and resolving personnel matters.

The Director of Human Resources will also be responsible for making sure all school policies and procedures are compliant with all relevant regulations and laws and managing a part-time HR and Payroll Assistant.


The Director of Human Resources is expected to:
General Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement HR strategies, policies, and procedures to support the school's talent management objectives and be consistent with Rivers' mission and values.
  • Provide support and some execution for hiring managers on recruitment and hiring processes, including job posting, selection process, candidate screening, interviewing and onboarding strategies.
  • Provide support for managers on employee relations, conflict resolution, and performance management.
  • Work with senior leadership on professional development initiatives.
  • Administer employee benefits programs including health insurance, retirement plan, and leave policies.
  • Manage and administer training programs including but not limited to workplace safety, harassment and abuse prevention, and (in conjunction with the Director of Institutional Equity) diversity and inclusion.
  • Manage employee separation process for both voluntary/involuntary terminations.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Stay current with the latest developments in human resourcesrelated regulations and practices and complete a periodic review of human relations policies.
Payroll

  • In consultation with the CFO, division and department heads, and the Head of School, prepare salary spreadsheets for the upcoming fiscal year and assist in the generation of letters of appointment as needed.
  • Manage the HR and Payroll Assistant's work of accurately process/transmit payroll (for school and camp employees) via the school's payroll provider.
  • Complete compensation and payroll benchmarking.
  • Other payroll tasks as necessary.
Benefits Management

  • Assist employees in enrolling in benefits plans when eligible.
  • Assist the Controller on Benefit Plan Audits.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations around health insurance, defined contribution plan, FSA eligibility and participation.
  • Produce benefit statements for employees annually.
  • Manage the renewal/open enrollment period for dental, health insurance, and FSA plans.
  • Conduct periodic reviews/benchmarking for salary and benefits to keep current on strategies for attracting and retaining excellent employees.
  • Serve as liaison to Defined Contribution Plan consultant and develop plan reports for Finance and full Board as needed.
  • Track sick time and vacation time as required by relevant laws and regulations.
  • Ensure that all plans comply with the applicable statutes (HIPPA, ERISA, IRS, DOL guidelines).
General Human Resources

  • Manage and execute the onboarding of employees to include ensuring that all mandatory paperwork is received and processed, and that employee data is added to the payroll system.
  • Manage the background checks of all employees and ensure that the school is complying in this area with all appropriate laws and regulations and complies with the school's CORI/SORI and fingerprinting policy.
  • Maintain all employee personnel files in compliance with all relevant regulations.
  • Ensure that annual Seasonal Employer Certification and Minimum Wage Waiver with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are filed as necessary.
  • Review and Management of the Employee Handbook to include annual review of policies and revision as necessary in conjunction with senior administration; ensuring compliance with applicable local, state and federal laws such as FMLA, ADA, ACA, Sexual Harassment, OSHA, Workers' Compensation, and ERISA.
  • Coordinate and/or conducts exit interviews to determine reasons behind separation.
  • Consult with legal counsel as appropriate, and/or as directed by the CFO on personnel matters.
  • Manage the Workers Compensation Audit.
  • File employee accident reports with the Workers' Compensation insurer as necessary.
Other

  • Coordinate employment data between departments making sure that all databases have correct information.
  • Assist in collecting and reporting benchmarking data to NAIS, NBOA, and other organizations as necessary.


A great candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a proven ability to keep sensitive and critical information confidential, a strong understanding of and experience in recruitment, onboarding, performance management processes, as well as be a strategic thinker with the ability to develop and execute HR initiatives.

A bachelor's degree is required with a preference toward one in Human Resources or a related field. Five years of experience with human resources management preferably in an educational setting is strongly preferred.

Candidates are preferred to have a SHRM-CP or SCP certification and possess the ability and desire to collaborate effectively with other members of the Rivers professional community to develop HR goals and those of the institution.
