Position Summary

Works under guidance of other Meteorologists to assess and predict weather conditions that contribute to the ignition, spread, and behavior of wildfires. Utilize weather expertise to develop and implement strategies to support Xcel Energy's Wildfire Mitigation plans. Provide meteorological insights that guide wildfire prevention, response, and management efforts. Communicate about high impact weather events that may increase wildfire risks.

Essential Responsibilities

Fire Weather Monitoring: Monitor and analyze weather patterns, including temperature, humidity, wind speed, and precipitation to identify conditions conducive to wildfire ignition and spread.Modeling and Prediction: Collect, process, and analyze meteorological and fire danger data from various sources, including surface observations and wildland fire databases. Utilize programming skills to collect, analyze, and display this information as needed. Utilize fire behavior models and historical data to predict fire growth, intensity, and direction. Provide real-time information to support firefighting efforts.Risk Assessment: Assess wildfire risks associated with Xcel Energy's infrastructure, transmission lines, and substations. Identify vulnerable areas and contribute to the development of mitigation plans.Early Warning Systems: Collaborate with company leadership to provide emergency response teams with information and early warnings for wildfire events. Provide timely alerts and recommendations based on meteorological data.Collaboration: Work closely with government agencies, fire departments, and other stakeholders to coordinate wildfire prevention and response strategies.Education and Outreach: Educate internal teams, field personnel, and the public about fire weather conditions, safety protocols, and best practices.Research and Innovation: Stay informed about advancements in wildfire meteorology, climate change impacts, and technology. Contribute to research projects and implement innovative solutions.Minimum Requirements Familiarity with numerical weather prediction models and aptitude for working with statistical analysis of data and gridded atmospheric data sets required. Experience with meteorological modeling tools, GIS software, and remote sensing tool. Working knowledge of Python, R, Power BI, SQL preferred. Strong analytical skills to interpret complex weather data. Strong communication skills to convey weather-related information effectively. Knowledge of wildfire management protocols and emergency response procedures preferred. Certification from the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) or similar organization is desired. The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $81,000.00 to $115,866.66 per year
