UnitedHealth Group seeks a Senior Data Engineer within its People Analytics team. The Data Engineer must have experience with modern database technologies. The Senior Data Engineer makes design decisions and partners across the organization in a collaborative manner to achieve results for our People Team applications.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Architect all phases of software engineering including requirements analysis, application design, code development and testing with a focus on business intelligence dataset development in particular
  • Design complex reusable components, frameworks and libraries
  • Lead the design and architecture to enable secure, scalable, and maintainable solution and should be able to clearly articulate the implications of design/architectural decisions, issues and plans to technology leadership
  • Lead design with other team members and product owners
  • Lead design and code reviews to ensure code developed meets business needs, coding best practices guidelines, unit testing, security, and scalability and maintainability guidelines
  • Work very closely with architecture groups and drive solutions
  • Use engineering best practices following an Agile methodology to deliver high-quality emerging tech solutions
  • Communicate with impact - influence and negotiate effectively with all internal and external stakeholders to achieve win-win solutions that advance organizational goals
  • Grow and maintain knowledge of and leverage emerging technologies
  • Developing and analyzing highly complex system standards, thresholds, and recommendations to maximize system performance
  • Analyzing project requirements and develop detailed specifications for new data warehouse reporting requirements
  • Provides ideas on how technology can improve business processes
  • Incorporates business objectives when evaluating processes to remove redundancies and waste
  • Recommends solutions for multiple channels
  • Initiates opportunities and influences stakeholders with ideas that drive business value
  • Influences stakeholders to assess and manage the impacts of changes and drive decision making
  • Designs solutions for every channel
  • Serves as a key resource on complex issues
  • Creating and maintaining internal process documentation
  • Proactively keeping data secure and decommissioning legacy content

Functions may include database architecture, engineering, design, optimization, security, and administration; as well as data modeling, big data development, Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) development, storage engineering, data warehousing, data provisioning and other similar roles. Responsibilities may include Platform-as-a-Service and Cloud solution with a focus on data stores and associated eco systems. Duties may include management of design services, providing sizing and configuration assistance, ensuring strict data quality, and performing needs assessments. Analyzes current business practices, processes and procedures as well as identifying future business opportunities for leveraging data storage and retrieval system capabilities. Manages relationships with software and hardware vendors to understand the potential architectural impact of different vendor strategies and data acquisition. May design schemas, write SQL or other data markup scripting and helps to support development of Analytics and Applications that build on top of data. Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of data engineering experience
  • 3+ years of full lifecycle application, software development experience
  • 3+ years of modern programming language such as Python, Java, and Scala
  • 2+ years of SDLC experience in an Agile environment
  • Working knowledge of the following business and technology concepts: APIs, CI/CD, Big Data, data architecture and governance
  • Experience with Cloud technologies and platforms such as Docker, OSE, Kubernetes, AWS, Snowflake, and Azure
  • Experience with Jenkins, GitHub, Big Data technologies like Spark
  • Experience using IDEs such as Eclipse, JBoss, IntelliJ
  • Relational database experience
  • Experience ingesting and working with large and complex datasets
  • Experience gathering requirements from end users

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with disaster and recovery models

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with al minimum wage laws as applicable.
