Duties

Incumbent executes a position responsibility that demonstrates fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned patients while developing technical competencies. The Nurse1/Level 2 registered nurse is a NOVICE nurse, with, upon hiring, no experience of the situations in which they are ultimately expected to perform. In this first year, the novice is "taught about situations in terms of objective attributes and other measurable parameters of a patient's condition, features of the task world that can be recognized without situational experience. While a novice brings principles and theory, context-dependent judgements and skill can only be acquired in real situations" (Benner). The Nurse 1 demonstrates performance that is broad enough to improve the care for a group of patients. Iffluences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Core elements of performances include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as customer service programs.

  • Documents the nursing process; Documentation is consistent, accurate, concise, and timely.
  • Revises plan of care according to evaluations of patient responses.
  • Organizes and completes own assignments in a safe and timely manner, assisting team members necessary.
  • Plans and delivers technically competent care to patients.
  • Evaluates and documents patient response to interventions and progress towards attainment of goals and expected outcomes.
  • Uses the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) and Bar Coded Medication Administration (BCMA) software per policy.
  • Demonstrates grade appropriate and consistent critical thinking skills.
  • Maintains professional boundaries with patients, families, and employees. Behavior is transparent and above reproach.
  • Effectively directs the flow of patient care and nursing resources.
  • Is self-directed in professional and staff development activities.
  • Incumbent sets up, uses, reprocesses, and maintains all unit/department-specific equipment that is designed by the manufacturer to reused for multiple patients. All steps and activities for set-ups, reprocessing, and maintenance will be completed in accordance with steps outlined in the equipment Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
  • Remains calm in stressful situations and takes appropriate action.
  • Promotes personal and professional integrity in the workplace.
  • Uses the proper chain of command for communication.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and unit in-services.
  • Assists team members and/or students in learning basic procedures.
  • Can manage the problems safely and effectively, recognizing his/her scope of practice.
  • Other duties as assigned.
