Job Summary

The role of the staff research lead position involves assisting with the coordination of activities involving staff, students, and volunteers within the Surgical Research Facility (SRF) on the UC Davis campus. Working under the general direction of the SRF Manager, this position is responsible for coordinating the efforts of multiple Principal Investigators (PIs) who utilize the facility. It includes collaborating with other departments and the Operating Room (OR) Supervisor to ensure that the SRF meets its objectives, complies with regulations and guidelines, and serves investigators and clients effectively. This role also includes Administrative functions to ensure accurate and timely charge capture for all services within the service area of responsibility.
The staff researcher will provide support for the research activities aimed at developing innovative advancements utilized in clinical trials and enhancing the understanding of various diseases through research conducted within the Surgical Research Facility. This position plays a vital role in securing future program project and disease team grant funding and contributes to the overall success of the SRF and the Stem Cell Program in their pursuit to discover novel treatments for patients suffering from currently incurable diseases, ultimately saving lives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS degree in Biological Sciences/Animal Sciences/other science degree, or equivalent number of years with extensive animal experience in a veterinary/Lab setting.
  • Experience operating anesthesia equipment.
  • Experience with restraint, induction, intubation, recovery, and euthanasia procedures in large animal models.
  • Experience with the requirements for laboratory safety, and compliance with occupational health, IACUC, Biosafety, and EH&S guidelines.
  • Experience with laboratory inventories, animal databases.
  • Knowledge and experience with administrative/business software, computer systems, database, web/email applications.
  • Experience maintaining training documents and OR record

Preferred Qualifications

  • Standard Operating Procedure development and writing.
  • Regulatory compliance and requirements pertaining to GLP polices.
  • Federal policies and procedures applicable to GLP studies.
  • Knowledge of science, basic human anatomy, and medical terminology.

Department Description
The School of Medicine (SOM) Surgical Research Facility (SRF) is located on the UC Davis campus. The SRF offers preclinical research, training, and study support in a wide variety of large animal models. It includes animal holding rooms, procedure rooms, and surgical suites. The Stem Cell Program and the SRF collaborate to advance and promote innovative translational research at UC Davis.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Assist lifting animals onto the surgery table. Stand, sit, and stoop for extended periods of lime. Good hand – eye coordination for catheter placement and drug delivery.
  • Work entails working in animal housing areas such as barns, surgical and laboratory space, and potential exposure to zoonotic diseases.
  • The position will work with large animals and equipment related to a medical setting. Retraining of large animals will occur occasionally (up to 3 hours/day), with the use of equipment (ventilators, cautery, lift tables, moving OR tables) that will be used more frequently (up to 3-6 hours/day).

Special Requirements
This position is a critical position and subject to a background check and drug screen. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history, identity checks and drug screen.
