The Hematology Advanced Practice Provider's role at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is to ensure quality of care through consultation, collaboration, continuing education, certification, and evaluation.

The Hematology Advanced Practice Provider at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine may practice in all or some of the following clinical settings in both inpatient and outpatient settings:

  • University of Miami Hospital- 1400 NW 12 Ave, Miami, Florida 33136
  • University of Miami Hospital and Clinics/Sylvester Cancer Center-1475 NW 12th Ave. Miami, Florida 33136
  • Jackson Memorial Hospital – 1611 NW 12th Avenue . Miami, FL 33136

JOB FUNCTIONS

The primary duties and responsibilities of the Hematology Advanced Practice Provider includes, but are not limited to:

Accountabilities:

Clinical (Both Ambulatory and Inpatient)

  • Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of clients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies.
  • Recognizes deviations from normal in the physical assessment. Works in collaboration with a physician in formulating treatment plans for health problems and follow-up.
  • Writes prescriptions for medications and blood products based upon laboratory results, orders and interprets routine diagnostic and follow-up studies, therapeutic measures, and post- discharge care in accordance with written practice protocols.
  • Requests written consultation from physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate and quality patient care.
  • Assesses and follows consult patients when required and independently of physician when needed.
  • Interprets and evaluates findings of studies/tests and intervenes accordingly.
  • Advises collaborating physician of appropriate information regarding patient care and reports to the physician the actions provided to the patients.
  • Evaluates the quality of care provided and recommends changes for improvement.
  • Initiates appropriate actions to facilitate the implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of the clients.
  • Answers patient-related inquiries via all forms of telecommunication throughout the system (Telephone, Email, Secure Chat, In-basket messaging, etc.)
  • Assists in the management of family dynamics and coping mechanisms during acute and chronic phases of patient care.
  • Conducts or participates in multidisciplinary rounds and ensures appropriate and quality care for patients.
  • Performs patient triage and determines the urgency of physician's evaluation.
  • Provides symptom management for side effects related to hematologic oncologic treatment.
  • Assist with Peer-to-Peer authorizations and filling out medical forms for patients.
  • Ensure that the clinic runs smoothly and efficiently, corresponding with referring physicians and patients to provide adequate coordinate of care to improve outcomes.
  • Performs bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures with IT chemo, Omaya reservoir access, PICC line removals and skin biopsies if competency met.
  • Act as a preceptor for APP students, fellows and new APP staff as appropriate.

Ambulatory Specific:

  • Rotates with colleagues taking weekend and holiday call from Sylvester patients.
  • Responds to medical and oncologic emergencies in the CTU and clinics.
  • Communicates with triage nurses regarding patients who need to be added to OCC clinic for symptom management, evaluation, and treatment.

Inpatient Specific:

  • Interacts with admitting physician, hospitalist, and other multidisciplinary teams.
  • Prioritizes consults to present to attending physician and rounds with attending daily on patients as appropriate.
  • Writes consult inpatient notes, discharge notes and dictates as appropriate.
  • Rotates with colleagues performing Hematology consultations and inpatient care at UMH as per divisional needs.

Research

  • CITI certification within three months of employment
  • Facilitates clinical research protocols and coordinates patient care with research staff.
  • Review clinical trial options with patients and families.
  • Interview and examine research subjects.
  • Evaluate research subjects' appropriateness for study inclusion/enrollment.
  • Follow all regulatory requirements for human subjects' research compliance and documentation.
  • Monitor, Review study related labs and imaging, and provide ongoing follow up to hematology patients on clinical trials.
  • Triage research patient communication.
  • Report SAEs and AEs to designated research staff.
  • Communicate with the PIs and Sub PIs with questions or concerns regarding holding or continuing investigational or standard of care treatment.
  • Perform study related procedures if competency met.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Master's degree in relevant field ( Acute Care APRN degree or PA Master's degree required)

Certification and Licensing:

  • Valid State of Florida APRN License or PA License.
  • Acute Care certification.
  • CITI certification or within three months of employment
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • OCN or AOCNP preferred.

Experience:

Minimum of two years of Hematology experience as an Advanced Practice Provider

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
