Vice President of Finance (FP&A)


A stealth Mode Third Rock new company is seeking a VP of Finance. The Vice President of Finance will play a critical role in linking business activities with financial reporting. This position will support finance partnerships with leaders in all functions, creating financial plans and ensuring discipline and transparency in spending through insightful analysis and reporting.


Key areas of focus include but are not limited to: lead and support the long-range and annual planning process for the organization and support all forecasting, strategic finance, and management reporting activities. Partner cross-functionally to implement new business systems & processes, accounting, optimizing the close process, strengthening, and maintaining internal controls in a SOX-compliant manner, and managing key relationships with external accounting and audit service providers. Critical to this role will be the ability to successfully drive strategic initiatives to improve the accuracy and efficiency of our financial reporting and optimize the planning and reporting processes through implementing new systems and processes.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and experienced hands-on leader who is focused and nimble, balancing strategic goals with day-to-day operations. The ideal candidate will be motivated by a dynamic, fast-paced environment and by working in partnership with other community-minded team members.

Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead the annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning processes with all business functions, partnering with business stakeholders and the CFO to meet process deadlines and established targets
  • Provide quarterly variance analysis of actuals to forecast and budget, explain and investigate any significant discrepancies, and understand key business drivers
  • Partner with CFO to drive the process for rationalizing department investments (Headcount, OPEX spend, and CAPEX) within the framework of both the annual and long-term operating plans. Update/maintain as necessary to support ongoing financial forecast deliverables
  • Partner with department budget owners to provide value-added financial analysis and support of business reviews and decisions from the financial perspective, including but not limited to operational efficiency, cost saving opportunities, capital expenditure decisions, vendor selection and negotiation, etc.
  • Develop reporting packages and dashboards for financial and business review meetings that succinctly summarize key insights on performance
  • Provide leadership and oversight of our accounting operations (financial close, procure to pay and payroll), external financial reporting, technical accounting, external audit, stock administration and taxes; and ensure management reports and financial statements are prepared timely and in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
  • Lead the preparation of any future required SEC documents, including the initial S-1 and all periodic filings, including 10-Qs, 10-Ks, S-3s and any other financial filings and collaboration with key executives, external accountants, and legal counsel.
  • Lead, mentor and grow a dedicated team of finance professionals
  • Stay abreast of key technical accounting pronouncements, analyze risks and benefits, and manage the adoption and timing;
  • Manage the existing capitalization table and lead stock administration system implementation to support the corporation growth
  • Other financial projects and responsibilities as necessary.


Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required, with active CPA license preferred.
  • Minimum 10+ years of relevant finance and accounting experience in the biotech industry
  • Prior experience with IPO(s), finance team build-out and public company transition is highly preferred.
  • Solid foundation in SEC rules and regulations and SOX compliance
  • A track record of being hands-on and nimble, implementing process improvements and other initiatives for a company going through various growth phases
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Experience establishing accounting processes and internal controls; SOX 404 compliance experience also strongly preferred.
  • Ability to think strategically and still maintain an attention to detail.
  • Strong problem solving/analytical skills and the ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Familiar and comfortable working in a small, growing company, able to work remotely with all functions in the organization.
  • Fluent in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.). Experience with Quick Books Online and upgrades to an ERP system are a plus.
