DESCRIPTION
The Operations Manager plays a key role at the Electoral Innovation Lab (EIL), a new national nonprofit launched in 2023. The individual in this position will develop and maintain systems to guide the organization’s business operations, meet basic financial management and compliance requirements, and address evolving infrastructure issues to support the group’s potential growth and sustainability. The organization's mission is to build a science of data-driven democracy reform using data, computation, and practical strategies for change. We believe that integration of scientific methods with policy research will help preserve and grow the promise of a functioning democracy in the United States.
RESPONSIBILITIES
● Assist the director in the design, planning, and implementation of business strategies and comprehensive goals for organizational growth and success.
● Oversee financial management systems, including income and expenses, contracts, invoices, timesheets, reimbursements, legal and tax compliance issues, and business insurance needs.
● Assist the director in organizational and project budgets, monitor progress, and provide reports.
● Develop and maintain effective office systems, procedures, and infrastructure to ensure all personnel have the resources, information, and support to perform well.
● Identify needs for contractors and consultants to supplement expertise when necessary.
● Assist director in developing systems to recruit, hire, onboard, compensate, and support staff as the organization grows.
● Provide logistical support for organizational events, conferences, travel, and meetings.
● Analyze and improve operational processes, identifying areas for enhancement, and implementing strategies to increase productivity and efficiency.
QUALIFICATIONS
● 5+ years of professional experience in nonprofit management and operations.
● Strategic thinking in determining how operations and finances support the broader mission of a 501(c)3 organization; experience in implementation of strategic planning projects for nonprofits preferred.
● Experience in project management; planning, executing, and monitoring project progress, setting project goals, collaborating with stakeholders, and managing project resources.
● Experience working with consultants and contractors; experience in helping to build a staff at a start-up nonprofit preferred.
● Knowledge of different business functions of a small nonprofit, such as HR, finance, marketing, etc.
● Experience in nonprofit financial management and compliance requirements.
● Ability to forecast and control expenses to strengthen organizational sustainability and growth; manage resources and ensure that the organization operates within its financial constraints.
● Outstanding organizational and time management skills.
● Excellent communications skills, relationship building, and conflict management.
● A history of working collaboratively and successfully with people and organizations from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, as well as a broad range of ideological positions and political views.
● High interest in working in an environment which allows an individual or team to be nimble, identify problems and solutions, encourage creative thinking, be highly collaborative, and dedicated to openness.
● Proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Workspace, Zoom, and QuickBooks
● Reliable transportation.
● Access to a strong and reliable Internet connection in your remote work location (for hybrid days).
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
● The location of the Election Innovation Lab is in Princeton, New Jersey. This is a hybrid contract position which allows some remote work, but also requires an average of two days a week in the EIL office to fully engage in the position’s responsibilities.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
This is a part-time contract position set at 10 to 20 hours per week at $40 to $60 per hour dependent on prior work experience, with potential to evolve into a salaried position with benefits.
