POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under the direction of the Assistant Vice President, this senior level position within University Relations and Development is responsible for collaborating across the university to maximize the potential of the university¿s highest capacity prospects and donors. Under the direction of the assistant vice president of strategic giving, this position will be responsible for securing and stewarding philanthropy from assigned individuals and families believed to be capable of making $1M to $5M gifts in support of Case Western Reserve¿s institutional priorities and to work with the president, provost, senior vice president for university relations and development, senior development officers, and school and college deans and administrators to further develop prospect and donor relationships.

Functioning as part of the university development team, the incumbent will be expected to work collegially, and in partnership, with university-based colleagues. The executive director advisor will support, serve, and counsel the senior vice president of university relations and development, the President's Office, and the executive team of University Relations and Development in a continuing effort to translate general objectives into specific principal giving plans and programs that will address established global fundraising goals. Remain current with technical expertise in tax and legal aspects of charitable giving.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Develop long-term and short-term principal and planned giving strategies in alignment with the strategic priorities of the university working in collaboration with the leadership of University Relations and Development division and the university¿s president and provost, and with a focus on Charitable Remainder Trusts, beneficial tax structures and blended gifts. (35%)
  2. Manage a portfolio of high potential individual and family prospects and donors through the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship cycles. Build relationships with a diverse population that will lead to leadership gift ($1M+) and principal gift ($5M+) solicitations that match the institution¿s top priorities. (25%)
  3. Provide strategic counsel to and work in partnership with the president, senior vice president, vice president, deans and school-based development offices, faculty, alumni and stakeholders of the univeristy to raise principal and planned giving support for priority programs, centers and departments. (15%)
  4. In collaboration with the Office of General Counsel, ensure the university¿s compliance with all federal and state laws governing the solicitation of charitable gifts and the administration of gift vehicles. Develop complex and unique charitable giving documents and contracts, including new products to offer stakeholders that matches their donor life cycle. Review and revise commonly used forms and documents. (10%)
  5. Serve as a senior staff member to counsel and advise the president, senior vice president, and vice presidents on philanthropic legal affairs, and policy and tax issues concerning university¿s fundraising program. (15%)


CONTACTS

  • Department: Frequent contact with assistant vice president and all levels of University Relations and Development staff as required to perform essential functions.
  • University: Regular contact with the President¿s office, vice presidents, deans, offices of General Counsel, the Controller, and the Treasurer, trustees, and alumni as required to perform essential functions.
  • External: Daily contact with donors, alumni, community organizers/advocates, corporate executives, federal, state, and local government officials and institutional fundraisers and leadership. Interacts with bank managers, CPAs, estate attorneys, and financial advisors.
  • Students: Infrequent contact with undergraduate, graduate, and professional students as required to perform essential functions.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

  • No direct supervisory responsibility.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience: Must have at least 10 years of estate, tax, and legal experience working closely with clients to manage their estate and tax situations.
  • Education: JD degree required.


REQUIRED SKILLS

  1. Working knowledge of gift planning to include bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts and charitable lead trusts.
  2. Excellent relationship management skills and ability to engender trust.
  3. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and judgment.
  4. Ability to be self-directed as well as succeed and thrive in a collaborative team environment.
  5. Ability to lead, inspire, and motivate others and assume leadership role on a team when appropriate.
  6. Effective written and verbal communication skills, including active listening.
  7. Effective public speaking and group presentation skills.
  8. High sense of accountability for achieving results.
  9. Understanding of community foundation and philanthropy processes.
  10. Ability to work comfortably in a fast paced environment.
  11. Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects as well as prioritize tasks within projects.
  12. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
  13. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  14. Computer proficiency (including Microsoft Office) and the ability to learn new programs.


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • General office working environment. Evening and weekend work hours will be required. Frequent travel required.
