Purpose of the Position

The Manufacturing Manager directs daily operations with a focus on Safety, Quality, Delivery/Service, Cost, Sustainability, and Morale in the Plant. This includes overseeing all parts of the production process: batching, staging, mixing, and packaging to ensure efficient production of quality products. The role also drives a lean culture, standardizes best practices, and leads continuous improvement initiatives. Collaborating across functions, the Manufacturing Manager proposes and spearheads strategic projects aimed at enhancing plant operations.


Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee manufacturing functions of a facility with 50-75 HC and an overall expense budget of $8-15 MM USD. Plan and execute operations in coordination with a master production schedule and other daily activities to ensure manufacturing objectives are accomplished safely and cost-effectively. Implement and achieve the weekly manufacturing plan for a production facility yielding over 12 million pounds annually.
  • Lead by example, fostering a culture of teamwork, accountability, and excellence among direct and indirect reports and peers.
  • Ensure Manufacturing operations are coordinated and compliant with support functions, such as Employee Safety, Environmental Management Systems, Food Safety & Quality Systems, R&D, Engineering, Customer Service, and Planning to achieve the factory's goals.
  • Lead and champion site-specific continuous improvement programs (GPE/GPS), spearheading GEMBA walks, Kaizen events, and other lean initiatives to improve all Supply Chain dimensions, including employee well-being, defect reduction, production efficiency optimization, waste minimization, and cost reduction. Evaluate and recommend improvements in methods, procedures, and processes.
  • Actively participate in the Employee Safety Committee and manage the production team’s safety program, including training material definition, training support, and incident/accident investigation.
  • Ensure Good Manufacturing Practices and Audit requirements are met.
  • Work with Engineering and Maintenance to manage the installation and startup of capital projects. Identify process bottlenecks and constraints, providing and implementing solutions to eliminate obstacles, including researching, evaluating, and recommending equipment and/or software technologies.
  • Utilize a Daily Management System to visually display and effectively communicate real-time operational performance and historical performance to all employees.
  • Manage and maintain the reporting of Metrics, KPIs, and Scorecards for plant supply chain.
  • Serve as the Autonomous Maintenance Subject Matter Expert of the site, with working knowledge of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). Implement, manage, and train Plant Employees on the Autonomous Maintenance program.


Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Oversee three production supervisors across three production shifts, and supervise a Continuous Improvement (CI) Facilitator.
  • Guide, educate, coach, develop, motivate, and supervise direct and indirect team members to achieve required Plant results. Conduct regular performance evaluations for production supervisors and provide constructive feedback for improvement.
  • Monitor operations closely to ensure Plant goals are met.
  • Observe all organization policies and applicable laws.
  • Ensure production employees are appropriately trained on all aspects related to their work.
  • Address associate complaints and resolve problems; work with and coach supervisors to do the same.
  • Step in as production supervisor as necessary, while also managing PTO coordination among the production supervisor team.
  • Solve personnel disputes and apply disciplinary actions.


Staffing Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Plant Manager and HR function to track and manage open headcount and overall staffing requirements for the Production department.
  • Work with Production leadership team and HR to interview, select, and hire new team members, as well as onboard and coordinate new employee training.
  • Collaborate with internal and external resources to identify, develop, implement, and continually monitor and adjust internal training programs for production employees.
  • Manage overtime assignment and utilization, supporting production plan and budget goals.
  • Decide on staffing and resource deployment or re-deployment as day-to-day needs arise, while observing long-term goals.


Working Relationships

  • Internal: Reports to the Plant Manager of the site. Oversees three production supervisors across three production shifts, and supervises a Continuous Improvement (CI) Facilitator. Closely interacts with all support functions: FSQS, HR, Engineering, Safety, Environmental, etc.
  • External: Frequently interacts and exerts managerial power over contractors, vendors, consultants, staffing agencies, etc.


Requirements

  • Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Food Science, Food Engineering, Operations Management, Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or a related discipline is highly preferred.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and/or Continuous Improvement roles, coupled with 3-5 years of related management experience, including overseeing supervisors and managing a multi-departmental manufacturing/production operation.
  • Experience in an environment with world-class food safety & quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001, HACCP, BRC, SQF) is required.
  • Strong background designing & implementing Continuous Improvement (Lean Manufacturing / Six Sigma / TPM) programs and initiatives required.
  • Certification in Continuous Improvement (Green/Black Belt, TPM practitioner) strongly preferred.
  • Food or beverage production experience required.
  • Ability to design, read, interpret, and explain documents such as safety standards, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals is required.


Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, and walk to communicate and listen effectively. This will require both office and plant floor environments.
  • Job will require time spent in the Manufacturing and Warehouse areas, requiring proper PPE – lab coat, ear plugs, safety glasses, and hair nets.
  • Intensive use of computer and phone.


Environmental Concerns

  • Strong shop floor environment, some office time expected to perform analysis.
