Description of Position: Serves as the Assessment Lead or Evaluation Lead and is a key analyst and recognized expert performing professional and scientific work requiring the assessment of future risks in the design, development, and adaptation of C5I (command, control, communications, computers, cyber, and information system) capabilities for various digital systems within USSPACECOM’s J6 Directorate. Performs assessments and evaluations of military exercise execution and plans.


Position Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Performs a broad range of strategy, plans, and policy analyses assignments developing methodologies for and evaluating the utility of C5I systems, related equipment, and force structures. Work entails unique problems, creativity, innovative use of techniques, advanced approaches, and/or new technologies. Establishes assumptions, measures effectiveness of approaches, and evaluates available alternatives. Analyzes the feasibility of advanced analytical approaches or radically different proposed policies. Defines problems and develops study plans. Determines sources of data and sample sizes. Plans, designs, and conducts test(s) to obtain data. Compiles, organizes, and analyzes data.
  • Utilizes scientific inquiry in the independent development of mathematical models and computer programs to evaluate and predict the ability to support assigned projects, studies, or problems. Serves as skilled analyst on established and novel modeling and simulation techniques. Develops models to test, analyze, and evaluate algorithms and other logic. Utilizes mathematical and statistical techniques, elements of operations research theory, engineering knowledge and innovative efforts to develop new solutions to previously highlighted and/or new problems which may be totally lacking in precedent.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, briefings, and seminars related to exercise development, planning and execution, program planning, advanced technologies, and support system concepts. Interfaces with peer headquarters elements and other technical/analytical agencies on advances in assessments, objectives, and unbiased perspectives on decisions. Represents the organization during visits with government and industry representatives. Coordinates the contributions of professionals and specialists, notes problems which arise, and resolves differences. Prepares and presents briefings and makes presentations on the study’s progress and results. Prepares technical reports and/or documents progress and results.
  • Accomplishes professional development and maintains technical proficiency through professional interaction with technical and professional societies, associations, academia, symposia, contractors, research and development (R&D) organizations and participation in formal training programs within the space continuum of responsibility. Keeps current of emerging analytical techniques and research methods through independent study and reading/reviewing technical journals and current literature.


Key Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of DoD and Combatant Command Structure
  • Knowledge of assessments and evaluations to determine the tactical actions of overall mission objectives
  • Understanding of the functions of a J6 in a combatant command and the types of projects that a J6 would undertake
  • Written communications skills
  • Bachelor’s degree (or 5+ years relevant experience)
  • Master’s degree preferred.


Qualification Requirements:

  • Experience at the next lower broadband/grade level (or equivalent) in performing Operations Research Analyst duties related to military exercises.
  • Education Requirements: Degree in operations research; or at least 24 semester hours in a combination of operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, science, or subject-matter courses requiring substantial competence in college-level mathematics or statistics. At least 3 of the 24 semester hours must have been in calculus.


Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI Security Clearance
  • This position has been designated as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Testing Program. Incumbent must pass initial and may be selected for random drug testing on short notice
  • Occasional travel away from the regular duty location may be required
  • Must sign a non-disclosure agreement
  • May be required to work irregular duty hours including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays
  • Position may be recalled to duty
