About College Visions: College Visions (CV) empowers low-income, first-generation students in Rhode Island to enroll in college, persist, and earn a degree. Founded in 2004, CV was piloted with 10 students and has grown to reach nearly 500 young people annually. 97% of participants enroll in college and 71% earn a degree within 6 years, far surpassing local and national norms. Summary: The College Access Program Junior Cohort Advisor is responsible for coaching

high school juniors through the college preparation process. Through individual advising and group workshops, the CAP Junior Cohort Advisor helps junior Scholars understand the college application process for their 12th-grade year, bolster college readiness skills, improve their academic and extra-curricular profiles, and develop life skills that will support them in college and beyond. The CAP Junior Cohort Advisor is also a valuable member of the overall College Access Team and supports the execution of other College Access Program elements outside of their direct caseload.


Management: The CAP Advisor reports to the College Access Program Director.


Hours: This is a full-time position. During the school year, work hours are Monday - Friday 10am-6pm or 11am-7pm. Summer hours are Monday - Friday 9-5 pm.


Responsibilities


Student Advising

  • Coach a cohort of 11th-grade high school students with diverse academic profiles through the college preparation process and help participants complete important junior year milestones related to the college application process and beyond
  • Facilitate regular one-on-one advising sessions that help students engage in goal-setting activities, evaluate their extracurricular involvement, identify areas of personal and professional growth, develop an academic improvement plan, draft college lists, explore career options, and gain college and career skills
  • Coordinate and run monthly workshops and events aligned with the Junior Cohort curriculum and program goals
  • Prioritize relationship-building to facilitate open, supportive coaching relationships; Provide a safe and judgment-free space centered on youth development practices that facilitates community-building
  • Maintain frequent communication with advisees and their families
  • Keep accurate, detailed advisee records, including contact information, demographics, and program outcomes, and enter information into CV’s database regularly


Program Development

  • Develop programming that addresses student needs and fosters community
  • Develop a database of resources (pre-college programs, scholarships, etc.) that provide students with key knowledge and opportunities that foster their growth
  • Support the coordination and facilitation of CAP events and workshops
  • Assist in cultivating relationships with high schools to support CAP student recruitment
  • Participate in staff educational sessions to discuss current research related to college access


Professional Growth

  • Participate in ongoing training and seek out external professional development opportunities
  • Engage in regular professional development opportunities to stay current with educational trends, student counseling, youth mentorship, youth development best practices, and school safety and security best practices.
  • Engage in ongoing learning regarding best practices and emerging research in the field
  • Strive for excellence, reflect on challenges, and celebrate victories


Programming, Fundraising, Administration + Other Activities

  • Document events and activities on an ongoing basis
  • Contribute to the development of new strategic initiatives across the organization
  • Support organization fundraising activities as needed
  • Promote CV in Rhode Island and in the college access sector
  • Handle administrative tasks including student data entry and maintenance of records


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Deep, well-articulated commitment to CV’s mission and values
  • Experience working with low-income, first-generation students
  • Ability to foster strong relationships with students and families
  • Energetic, positive, and flexible
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills
  • Fluency in Spanish or a second language is a plus
