Job Title: Network Engineer

Location: Suffolk, VA

Pay: $35-$45/hour

Contract: 5 month +


Under limited supervision, performs senior engineering tasks to maintain the network infrastructure, servers, and other network-related equipment to allow users to work efficiently through the use of computerized systems. Work involves designing, planning, implementing, troubleshooting, analyzing, and maintaining the Network infrastructure. Reports to the Network Manager.



Essential Job Functions

  • Designs, plans, and implements the infrastructure of the networks, including configuring LAN/WAN equipment such as Cisco switches, routers, and backbone equipment to include all fiber optic and copper cabling.
  • Installs, configures and maintains VMware/ESX, VMware/Horizon, Nutanix, and various other server/network environments.
  • Administers and supports the antivirus, content filtering and antispyware solutions through enterprise firewalls and NextGen client security solutions.
  • Supports, configures and maintains backup environment for the virtual server environment and network shares.
  • Designs network solutions that support capacity and/or security needs.
  • Manages operation and upkeep of telephone system, including installing and maintaining VoIP hardware and software.
  • Manages and maintains the IP address scheme; coordinates new subnet addresses and network connections.
  • Troubleshoot to determine root cause of network related interruptions and then implement long term fixes and solutions.
  • Creates and maintains comprehensive documentation for all implemented network solutions.
  • Installs, configures, and maintains the network and server environment which supports application servers, file sharing servers, including a Microsoft Exchange cluster environment, Microsoft Windows Active Directory, Enterprise Firewalls, VPN, Wireless Access Points, Dell Server platforms, VMware/ESX, VMware/Horizon and Nutanix environment.
  • Performs daily maintenance and problem resolution, version upgrades on Firewall, ESX and Nutanix environments and routine hardware configuration to include installations of new equipment in Data Center.
  • Participates in 24X7 on-call rotation.
  • Monitors Data Center performance and environmental levels to ensure high performance to end users.
  • Provides specifications for network hardware to include switches, routers, server and data storage hardware and develops relationships with vendors for the acquisition of such equipment.
  • Assists co-workers on IT-related projects as needed.
  • Suggests and contributes necessary knowledge of systems and network infrastructure for Strategic Planning.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field with three to five years of experience working with networks and related operating systems,; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Requires hands on experience implementing and administrating virtual server environments, WAN/LAN equipment to include core routing and switching in addition to enterprise level firewalls. Experience in maintaining VoIP and telecommunications infrastructure is desired.

Required to have limited exposure/exp with Cisco Call Manger/voice systems.


Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCNA), Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer Certification (MCSE) or experience relative to cloud. Additional certifications preferred include Network +, VCP (VMware) or NCP (Nutanix). Position requires a valid driver's license.

  • Ability to troubleshoot network errors/failures and provide resolutions.
  • Knowledge of and competency in OSI model, Ethernet, and TCP/IP networking.
  • Ability to implement and administer common TCP/IP-based services, including DNS, DHCP, HTTP, FTP, SSH, SMTP, etc.
  • Ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data; includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.
  • Ability to apply principles of persuasion and/or influence over others in coordinating activities of a project, program, or designated area of responsibility.
  • Ability to read a variety of reports, informational and technical documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures.
  • Ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech.

  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the City and or departmental practices as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position.
  • Ability to perform technical tasks to maintain existing back-end systems including e-mail, server updates, SPAM and Web filters, and firewall updates, and implement new systems.
  • Ability to assist in the design, integration and run of complex interdisciplinary systems.
  • Ability to provide support to end users as needed.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques for development and administering programs.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, members of the general public, and all other groups involved in the activities of the department.
  • Ability to assemble information and make written reports and documents in a concise, clear, and effective manner.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and work with little direct supervision as situations warrant.
  • Ability to perform required calculations.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with computers and software programs typically utilized in the position.
