POSITION DESCRIPTION


Position: Controller


Department: Finance


Hours: 40 hours per week, flexible hours as required.


Reports To: CFO


Summary of position: Under the direction of the CFO, the Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations and supervise a small team including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and grants administration. Work closely with program leaders not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations.


Education and Licensure:

Preferred: Hold a current CPA license and Master’s degree in relevant field


Experience:

Required: Minimum 7-10 years of experience successfully leading and managing a finance/accounting department. Strong in-depth knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles as well as Government Auditing Standards.


Essential functions:

· Oversee the month end close including the reconciliation of all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.


· Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.


· Coordinate all audit activity.


· Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate results of monthly and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of Walker’s financial status.


· Assist the leadership team in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.


· Support the CFO in engaging the board’s audit, investment and finance committees via the preparation of an executive summary.


· Oversee grants accounting for both private and federally sponsored grants and contracts; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants, ensure compliance with Single Audit requirements.


· Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the program vice presidents; continuously collaborate with program vice presidents to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.


· Track the performance of endowment invested assets in keeping with investment policy guidelines.


· Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization.


Preferred

· Third party insurance billing experience.


· Experience preparing the State of Massachusetts’ Uniform Financial Report (“UFR”).


· Experience managing a staff of at least 2 accounting personnel, including goal setting and performance reviews.


· Experience working with auditors in the completion of annual tax returns including the IRS 990 and State of Massachusetts Form PC.


· Demonstrated experience implementing updated ERP systems.


· All other duties, as assigned.

Supervision to be exercised: Senior Accountant, Staff Accountant
