Position Overview:

United Way of Greater Newark (UWGN) seeks a creative and mission-driven Chief Development Officer to oversee and grow all aspects of its fundraising and development program. The CDO will be responsible for building a culture of philanthropy, implementing strategic initiatives, and driving resource development across 14 municipalities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Fundraising Strategy and Execution: Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising plan that includes workplace campaigns, major gifts, corporate sponsorships, events, and digital fundraising.
  • Donor Cultivation and Stewardship: Build and maintain relationships with individual, corporate, and foundation donors. Lead efforts to cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts.
  • Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a development team of three professionals, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and effective execution of fundraising activities.
  • Community Engagement and Networking: Represent UWGN at community events, serving as a key public figure to raise visibility and engage new donors.
  • Board and Volunteer Support: Collaborate with the Board Resource Development Committee to engage high-level volunteers and leverage their influence in donor identification and engagement.
  • Event Management: Oversee signature fundraising events, including the DeTocqueville Society, Women’s United, and Young Professionals United initiatives.
  • Strategic Planning: Serve as a member of the Senior Staff, contributing to the strategic vision and guiding the organization toward its fundraising goals.

 

Key Qualifications:

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in fundraising, major gifts, corporate partnerships, or equivalent roles. Experience in managing teams and working with volunteer leadership is preferred.
  • Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Proven track record in cultivating donor relationships and meeting ambitious fundraising goals.
  • Commitment: Passion for UWGN’s mission and dedication to advancing the needs of underserved communities.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Technical Proficiency: Experience with donor management software and data-driven fundraising strategies.
