Job Description

As the Senior Director of Development, Global Philanthropy at Vanderbilt University, you will play a crucial role in enhancing the university's relationships with alumni and parent major gift prospects abroad, particularly in Asia and the Middle East. Your main focus will be to boost philanthropic support for the institution by working closely with institutional leaders and other members of the Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) team. This role involves creating and implementing global philanthropy fundraising strategies, managing a portfolio of major gift prospects, and collaborating with various stakeholders to achieve fundraising goals.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Align the philanthropic interests of donors with the university's objectives.
  • Provide strategic guidance to the DAR team on complex gift opportunities.
  • Engage directly with major gift prospects while also supporting other team members behind the scenes.
  • Articulate and secure backing for institutional priorities.
  • Understand and promote DAR's messaging effectively to highlight the university's value proposition.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with colleagues to advance common goals.
Secure major and principal gifts:
  • Collaborate closely with the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Development to establish and implement a new Global Philanthropy Program.
  • Lead efforts to engage, solicit, and steward major gift prospects internationally.
  • Manage a portfolio including outright gifts, pledges, and planned contributions.
  • Arrange face-to-face meetings with donors to drive fundraising initiatives.
  • Develop annual solicitation plans and secure significant philanthropic contributions.
  • Achieve annual fundraising targets exceeding $1.5M.
Enhance the success of global philanthropy fundraising:
  • Support a comprehensive fundraising program aimed at securing resources for key university priorities.
  • Create solicitation strategies for potential major donors across the globe and lead direct solicitations.
Serve as a liaison to other development teams:
  • Collaborate with DAR, Chancellor, and Provost offices to achieve university-wide objectives.
  • Work with various schools and programs to identify significant fundraising opportunities.
Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for Senior Director must possess a bachelor's degree and at least 8 years of relevant experience in fundraising, preferably within a higher education setting. Essential qualifications include proficiency in languages common in Asia and the Middle East, a track record of securing major gifts, and excellent communication skills. Additionally, the candidate should demonstrate expertise in working with high-level donors, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and the ability to navigate a complex academic environment proficiently.
