Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA)

The RNFA is responsible for utilizing the nursing process to coordinate and provide patient care during operative procedures. Here's what the role involves:

  • May act as a scrub or circulating nurse during procedures.
  • Demonstrates expertise in aseptic techniques, operating room standards, and infection prevention.
  • Serves as a mentor for nursing students and new unit nurses.

The RNFA works closely with surgeons to ensure safe operations and optimal patient outcomes. Responsibilities include:

  • Practicing peri-operative nursing.
  • Conducting independent peri-operative assessments and post-operative care evaluations.
  • Operating under the direct supervision of the surgeon.
  • Adhering to Foothill Regional Medical Center's policies and the Nurse Practice Act of California.

Considering factors like patient acuity and surgical complexity, the RNFA must:

  • Recognize and communicate limitations.
  • Refuse tasks beyond their preparedness or comfort level.
