Supporting the education process for students who are deaf and hard of hearing by facilitating accurate communication between students, teachers, hearing peers, and other school personnel. The interpreter will also be part of the student's educational team.
Essential Functions:- Voicing for the student when necessary
- Interpreting/transliterating various activities for deaf and hard of hearing students
- Providing tutoring to enhance student's language and vocabulary skills
- Collaborating with school staff and participating in educational team meetings
- Improving interpreting skills through professional development activities
- Empowering students to self-advocate for their needs
Supervisory Responsibility: No direct supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment: Moderate noise level in the work environment.
Physical Demands: Sitting, walking, reaching, and lifting requirements.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: Full-time position with occasional evening and weekend work if needed.
Travel: Travel between buildings and to team meetings may be necessary.
Qualifications:Education and Experience:
- BA or Associate's Degree in Educational Interpreting
- Minimum score of 3.5 on Educational Interpreter's Proficiency Assessment (EIPA) OR Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Display knowledge of communication techniques
- Understanding of sign language and nonverbal communication methods
- Familiarity with office practices, English language, and Code of Ethics
- Ability to interpret and transliterate effectively
- Establishing and maintaining effective relationships
Work Authorization/Security Clearance: U.S. work authorization required.
