Raleigh, North Carolina, United States American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina Full time
Job DescriptionJob DescriptionAbout the ACLU of North CarolinaFounded in 1965, the ACLU of North Carolina (ACLU-NC), an affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union, is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that stands as the state's guardian of liberty – working in courts, the General Assembly, and communities to protect and advance civil rights and civil liberties for all North Carolinians.
The ACLU-NC brings together litigation, legislative advocacy, communications, and organizing strategies to empower communities and achieve our objectives in major issue areas including criminal law reform, racial justice, LGBTQIA+ equality, reproductive freedom, and the rights of immigrants. With nearly 30,000 members and supporters across the state, the ACLU-NC has a staff of over 20 people with an office in Raleigh.

The Opportunity
In collaboration with Narrative Arts, ACLU-NC has produced the film North Carolina's Abortion Story. This film is an impactful documentary that aims to amplify the voices of individuals navigating the landscape of reproductive rights in North Carolina. The film explores the history of abortion in North Carolina, the modern movement for reproductive justice, and the impact of abortion bans on patients and providers. Through intimate interviews, personal narratives, and expert commentary, the documentary paints a vivid picture of the historic and current barriers impacting people seeking abortion in the state.
The ACLU-NC Policy & Advocacy team seeks an Outreach Intern to join our team in garnering support for North Carolina's Abortion Story. Under the supervision of the Director of Policy and the Policy Analyst, the Outreach Intern will help identify and create relationships with statewide stakeholders to invite groups to host screenings of the film in their communities. The Outreach Intern will be responsible for scheduling 100 screenings across the state with an emphasis on screenings in south Wake County, Western NC, and Eastern NC.
The Outreach Intern will be expected to work 15-25 hours each week, beginning July 1st through August 9th, 2024. This is a remote position without required travel.
Key Responsibilities
  • Identify and build relationships with community partners statewide who might be interested in hosting a film screening in their community
  • Facilitate at least statewide screenings
  • Support screening hosts by responding to inquiries and offering guidance as needed
  • Create a tracking system to track outreach efforts and outcomes
  • Communicate with hosts after the screening to ensure the organization has an accurate record of each viewing
  • Other responsibilities as assigned
To Be Successful in This Role, the Candidate Will Have
  • Commitment to Mission: Demonstrated commitment to and a strong understanding of civil rights, civil liberties, social justice, and the ACLU-NC's mission, goals, and programs.
  • Commitment to Values: Alignment with the values of the ACLU-NC and professional commitment to advancing them.
  • Commitment to Diversity: Ability to work in an environment that respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socioeconomic circumstances.
  • Communication: Proficient-level ability to communicate and work effectively and respectfully with staff, volunteers, and the general public. Skilled in communicating both orally and in writing.
  • Technical Support: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Self-Management: Self-starter with strong follow-through and the ability to meet deadlines with limited supervision. Attention to detail, excellent organization, and time-management skills.
  • Teamwork: Ability to think creatively and work collaboratively to promote ACLU-NC objectives.
To Stand Out from Others, You Will Have:
  • Some college education or equivalent experience.
  • Community outreach experience.
  • Experience with one or more of the ACLU of North Carolina's strategic priority areas: racial justice, immigrants' rights, criminal law reform, gender equity, reproductive freedom, or LGBTQIA+ equality.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus but not required.
