Facility:Dayton Children's - Main CampusDepartment:Clinical DietitiansSchedule:Full timeHours:40Job Details:The Clinical Dietitian assesses nutritional needs; develops and implements nutritional care plans, and evaluates and reports these results appropriately; participates in on-going education programs for hospital staff and the community; participates as an integral part of the nutrition care team in assigned and covered areas; coordinates activities with the needs of the department's management team; shares on-call responsibilities on a rotating weekly basis during non-scheduled working hours (evenings, weekends, and holidays).

Additionally, the Clinical Dietitian II position has obtained the necessary knowledge, skills, and professional work experience to demonstrate proficiency working in a focused area of practice (such as Pediatrics). Clinical Dietitian II demonstrates development of the foundation of progressive problem solving, application of in-depth scientific and theoretical knowledge, and utilizes professional experience in the care of patients.

Department Specific Job Details:

Patient Nutritional Care - 35%

  • Assesses patient's condition, educational, counseling, medical, and social needs, and associated goals on an initial and routine basis.
  • Counsels patients/families on restricted or special nutrition protocols and adapts the medical requirements to the patient's lifestyle and preferences for home applications.
  • Facilitates patient/family participation in decision making and goal setting.
  • Evaluates the achievement of learning objectives during educational sessions with patients/families.
  • Documents recommendations, care provided, and patient's response to care according to the Nutrition Care Process, using the International Dietetics and Nutrition Terminology. Routinely discusses directly with providers and nurses.
  • Rapidly recognizes and anticipates subtle needs and changes based on past experiences, and coordinates/communicates with appropriate resources when needed.
  • Coordinates/communicates with appropriate resources during all phases of patient care, including transitioning to next step (new unit, another clinic, or home environment).
  • Identifies impact of specific small differences between products in individualized clinical situations and focuses on clinical outcomes and cost effectiveness.
  • Communicates and applies the best available research, knowledge, and evidence-based practice guidelines.
  • Responds to consultations in a time that at least meets, but preferably exceeds, hospital policies.
  • Attends and participates in appropriate service, unit, or clinic rounds and patient management conferences.
  • Acts as a patient advocate in representing their nutrition needs and participates actively as a member of the health care team.
  • Delegates and collaborates integration of medical care with other team members, including the transition of care to another service area dietitian.

Professional Skills - 20%

  • Balances details of work with hospital and department vision, mission, and culture.
  • Cross-covers patient care areas to ensure quality patient care.
  • Utilizes time management and professional skills to effectively prioritize tasks, maintain flexibility, and accomplish daily work load.
  • Examines and breaks down complex issues or problems and creates solutions and makes decisions.
  • Serves as a resource to care team and colleagues by interpreting, synthesizing, and sharing information related to nutrition.
  • Projects calm confidence as the nutrition expert in interactions with providers, employees, visitors, patients, and families.
  • In all areas of work, incorporates criteria provided by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Proficient level in the SOP/SOPP guidelines.
  • Develops and implements plan for professional growth and development, including participation in professional organizations and activities, workshops, seminars, and staff development programs.

Leadership - 20%

  • Serves as a role model for the department internally and throughout all professional interactions, keeping in mind the education of self and others while maintaining a cohesive environment.
  • Assumes and maintains a role of responsibility on a workgroup or committee and/or participates in the revision of policies/procedures for Clinical Nutrition, Dietetics, or area of specific work group.
  • Serves as an advanced mentor to peers, students, and/or colleagues internally, through professional organizations, or regional/state/national levels. Precepts dietetic interns, dietetic students, and/or medical students at least 120 hours annually.
  • Contributes to and influences nutrition policy issues at all levels of government.

Quality Improvement - 15%

  • Assumes emerging leadership in quality assurance/performance improvement (QAPI) projects.
  • Increasingly applies the science of QAPI
  • Selects and implements standardized protocols for nutrition services in collaboration with department leadership and peers
  • Involves inter-disciplinary team in outcomes management

Confidentiality and Safety - 10%

  • Proactively identifies and seeks correction to potential hazards or medical error-causing situations for patients, visitors, and employees while carrying out daily responsibilities.
  • Appropriately reports medical errors or safety concerns within the organization using the hotline, QRR, or direct reporting using the chain of command.
