Position Purpose:


The design and development of all trailer suspension control systems, including existing product applications and new product development.

This individual is also expected to be an active member of the staff management team of the Controls Business Unit.



Essential Functions:

  • Supervises the efforts of product engineers, CAD designers, test engineers and R&D technicians.
  • Provides management and direction for all current product updates, new product programs and new concept development from conception through launch utilizing the Product Planning and Development Process. Provides timely program completion.
  • Establishes a tracking matrix consisting of timing goals for the above-mentioned deliverables. Maintains this matrix for regular management updates.
  • Maintains detailed action item lists for all product programs. Coordinates regular meetings with required resources to review and update program status, goals and action item lists.
  • Coordinates the technical design and test aspects of new product programs.
  • Responsible for annual cost reductions through VA/VE efforts.
  • Responsible for product warranty evaluation and root cause determination. Manages design or process changes to reduce warranty cost as needed.
  • Provides leadership in creating innovative product designs and developing them through implementation.
  • Provides technical input and participates with the business unit director and marketing personnel to identify opportunities and define product programs.
  • Provides technical support to sales and field service teams. Coordinates application engineering and problem resolution activities; participates in product launch training.
  • Provides continuous improvement through employee development, process improvement and elimination of waste, and effectively manages technical professionals, providing leadership, coaching, and opportunities for employees to develop. Helps to assure safety in the office and laboratory.

Education & Training

Bachelor's degree in related engineering field required. Master's degree preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years' experience in automotive, preferably heavy-duty truck/trailer, chassis system design and/or development
  • 3+ years' experience in the supervision of engineers and engineering support personnel
  • Experience with the design, development and application of pneumatic or hydraulic controls highly desirable
  • Formal skills training in team dynamics, problem solving techniques, and leadership
  • Experience in leading successful employee involvement efforts is a must.
  • Proficient in analytical problem-solving techniques
  • Possess strong written and oral communication skills.
  • High attention to detail is required.
  • Must possess strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Ability to motivate and work well with others.
  • Ability to prioritize, plan and execute multiple responsibilities, projects, and activities.

Physical Demands:

Some light lifting, mixture of standing and sitting.
