Whether it's knowing the work you do makes a difference, safety, or community, there is a spot at VDOT for you to help keep Virginia moving The Richmond District's Church Road Area Headquarters is seeking an individual to serve as a member and leader of a work crew performing a combination of skilled equipment operation, preventive maintenance, and manual labor tasks in order to maintain Virginia roadways in Dinwiddie County.

As a Crew Leader Maintenance , you will schedule assignments received from supervisor, identify proper procedures and work assignments. Demonstrate considerable skill and expertise as an operator in the proper and safe use of equipment; and perform snow and ice removal and other emergency response activities. Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Ensure crew has proper personal protection equipment, and train crew in proper safety methods. Apply Virginia Work Area Protection Manual (VWAPM) for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc. and take corrective action when unsafe conditions are identified; provide traffic control in support of maintenance operations; and conduct on-the-job training and recommend additional training needs to Superintendent. Position is designated as essential and, as such all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. Minimum Qualifications


• Considerable knowledge of highway maintenance and construction practices and procedures.

• Basic knowledge of inventory procedures

• Skill in operating and maintaining light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment.

• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.

• Ability to lead, direct, and oversee the work of others and train others.

• Ability to interpret and apply work zone safety and traffic control manuals.

• Ability to perform heavy manual labor and use hand and power tools.

• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.

Additional Considerations


• Experience in roadway maintenance activities.

• Experience overseeing the work of others.

• Experience in work zone set-up, traffic controls, and flagging to include use of the VA Work Area Protection Manual (VWAPM) or similar regulations.

• Knowledge of basic surveying principles and equipment.

• Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety Certification desired.

• Emergency operations experience to include snow-removal, storm damage, and accident clean-up.

• Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
