TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Work Year - 12 Months

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, performs building cleaning and facilities maintenance work in schools and administrative buildings. Work of the class involves varied building cleaning duties and related facilities and grounds maintenance work.

Employees receive on the job training in the application of simple manual skill and use of cleaning and grounds tools and equipment, and supplies to clean interior of buildings and maintain grounds.

Employees who possess the appropriate certificate may be assigned responsibility for checking or operating heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning equipment. Employees in these classes are considered emergency personnel and are required to report to buildings during inclement weather.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs all duties assigned by the administrator such as:
a. Sweeping, mopping, scrubbing and waxing floors(*)
b. Cleaning blinds, window glass (inside and outside), light fixtures, walls, carpets, restroom facilities (showers, urinals, commodes, all fixtures, etc.) (*)
c. Maintains grounds related to building (cuts grass and shrubbery, trims and edges)(*)

  • Assists with training of new employees in all phases of housekeeping and grounds care. (*)
  • Assists the administrator in scheduling and supervising established work standards of other building custodians. (*)
  • The employee shall carry out such other and further duties, whether specifically listed above or not, as are assigned or required by such employee's supervisor, other appropriate school personnel, law board policy administrative regulation, department handbook, as are reasonably necessary to the efficient operation of the school system and its mission.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:


Within six months of new hire into this position, employee must have knowledge of all seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System to include: commitment to the student, professional, interpersonal, organization and problem solving skills, and knowledge of the job.

Knowledge of the methods, materials and practices of building and grounds work; ability to operate and maintain custodial and grounds care equipment; including scrubbers, and hydraulic lifts, uses personal protective equipment and other safety tools and practices; monitors building spaces and grounds to ensure a safe and secure environment; possesses a basic knowledge of emergency response procedures.


EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:


Completion of at least the ninth grade (preferably graduation from high school or equivalent) and sufficient training to comprehend oral or written instructions.

Should have previous experience in public housekeeping. Experience in leading or supervising work activities is desirable. Should be able to pass rigid physical examination and to perform heavy manual work

CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
None

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to lift moderately heavy objects, climbs, and completes inspection of work and related maintenance activities.

Nature of work is repetitive and requires sustained physical effort and involves some heavy work in moving or lifting furniture and equipment with some exposure to accident and injury hazards and disagreeable elements.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Frequent overtime or night work required, etc. Ability to respond to emergency work requirements at any time and to work overtime and unusual hours.
