About this opportunity:

The main purpose of the Manager, Project Management role is to provide leadership toward the successful delivery of the site projects portfolio, coaching to those involved and assurance of the proper processes used. The Manager, Project Management will lead, coach and support staff in the application of all relevant practices, support ongoing career progression and ensure key systems, processes, and reporting cadence are in place to monitor and improve project health.

Responsibilities:

  • The Manager, Project Management has primary responsibility for overseeing and leading project team members to deliver a portfolio of projects as part of the site's investment program
  • Forms and leads the team of project managers and other professionals to develop, engineer, procure, construct, and commission projects in accordance with the approved plan and business expectations including safety, quality, operation, schedule, cost, and competitiveness
  • Applies strong leadership, interpersonal, influencing and communications skills to mentor team members and interact with stakeholders at all levels across the organization to work through technical and business challenges and drive alignment
  • Verifies work for stage gate reviews, governance, and verification per the Cenovus Project Delivery System and relevant processes
  • Drives standardization and continuous improvement for the project management discipline
  • Manages capability across the projects department
  • Career development of team to grow technical and leadership capability of the organization
  • Performance management of the Squad Leads, Project Managers, and Project Engineers
  • Supports business prioritization and technical verification
  • Understands unit priorities and supports squad leaders to manage their portfolios
  • Ensures standardized/best practice tools/reports/systems are in place to monitor project performance at the portfolio level across engineering progress, procurement and contracting requirements, and construction activities
  • Leads Performance Reviews of the project portfolio, to safely deliver the Site Projects portfolio in accordance with approved constraints of cost, quality and schedule
  • Supports/coaches monthly cost forecasting in service of ongoing LRP process
  • Provides 'Agree' for projects to move through gates, by undertaking peer-review style project reviews
  • Where delegated by CAM/Unit Lead, leads Contractor Engineering performance review, and demonstrates effective contractor management through early identification of issues or concerns with contractors' delivery and collaborative engagement with contractor to correct/remedy issues or concerns
  • Provides coaching in the space of safety leadership through visible presence at construction sites, engaging workforce in safety conversations, understanding how work gets done, risks involved, and contractor response plans to mitigate risks
Qualifications:

Education/Certifications:
  • Bachelor's degree of Science in Engineering required
  • Profession Engineer's (PE) License considered an asset
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification considered an asset
  • Master's degree considered an asset
Experience:
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in refinery or similar oil/petrochemical industry, including project engineering/management and/or construction, turnaround, operational or technical leadership
  • Experience successfully executing a diverse range of projects, programs and/or site activities
  • Previous supervisory or team leader experience
  • Experience engaging stakeholders from different parts and levels of the organization
  • Experience managing engineering and/or construction activities with working knowledge of engineering deliverables and construction practices
Technical Skills:
  • Strong people management, ability to influence, drive decisions and coordination capabilities required
  • Strong collaborative working skills required
  • Strong communication and team building skills
  • Ability to lead teams through challenges and ambiguous situations
  • Understanding of project management processes and best practices
  • Familiarity with contracts of services and materials
  • Passion for coaching and developing individuals and teams striving for best in class performance
  • Working knowledge of relevant industry practices, codes, and standards
