Part-Time Lecturer, Identities in American Politics in the 21st Century
New York University: NYU - NY: NYU Washington, DC
Location
Washington, DC
Description
Position Description:
NYU's Washington, DC Academic Center is seeking a local, part-time lecturer to teach an undergraduate politics course for upper-level undergraduate students. The course will be under the sponsorship of NYU's College of Arts and Science.
The course is expected for Fall 2024 (late August to late December). The class meets once a week for three hours. In addition to the time required for syllabus and course preparation, classroom instruction, and assessment, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute office hour per instruction day, during which the instructor will be available to meet with students. The instructor will work with the Politics department in New York to finalize the course description and the syllabus,
Course Description:
The course focuses on the importance of identities--in all their forms--in contemporary American politics and public policy. It considers, for example, changing demographics and their effects on political parties' platforms and policies; research on inter-group relations, prejudice, and discrimination; the influence on politics of some identity groups and communities (for instance, LGBTQ or gun rights advocates), and the declining impact of other groups (such as labor unions). The course asks: how and why is identity becoming more central as other concerns become more marginal? And how do new technologies--like social media and data-driven campaigning--affect and sustain these changes?
