About the organization

In 1983, a humble initiative known as the Lee County Food Cooperative opened its doors, with a mission to address hunger in Southwest Florida.

Little did its founders know that over the next four decades, this organization would evolve into the formidable Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida, a beacon of hope for millions facing food insecurity.

Initially, the cooperative focused on distributing surplus government provisions, including cheese and dairy products. Yet, driven by a fervent commitment to serve the community, it quickly expanded its efforts.

By forging partnerships with retailers and growers, the cooperative broadened its reach and impact, becoming a vital lifeline for those in need.

In 1985, recognizing its growing influence across the region, the organization rebranded itself as the Southwest Florida Food Bank.

This change reflected its dedication to serving a broader geographic area, transcending county boundaries to combat hunger on a larger scale.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1994 when the organization adopted its current name, honoring the legacy of the late singer Harry Chapin, a tireless advocate in the fight against hunger.

This symbolic gesture underscored the organization's unwavering commitment to its mission.

In 2009, the food bank marked another milestone by relocating to a spacious 55,000-square-foot warehouse in Fort Myers, providing enhanced capacity to serve the growing needs of the community.

This move positioned the organization for further expansion and impact in the years to come.
Throughout its journey, the Harry Chapin Food Bank has continually adapted and innovated to better serve those facing hunger.

Initiatives such as the mobile pantry program, launched in 2010, have enabled the organization to reach underserved communities directly, providing essential support to residents in need.

In times of crisis, the food bank has demonstrated remarkable resilience and compassion. Following the devastation of Hurricane Irma in 2017, the organization sprang into action, providing emergency relief to Southwest Florida.

Through massive distributions of supplies and emergency mobile pantries, the food bank played a critical role in assisting communities in their time of need.

Undeterred by challenges, the organization has remained steadfast in its mission, even amidst the global pandemic of 2021.

Despite unprecedented obstacles, the food bank rose to the occasion, distributing an astonishing 47.6 million pounds of food in a single year, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to serving the community.

In 2022, faced with the worst hurricane in over a century, the food bank once again demonstrated its resilience, distributing approximately 1.2 million pounds of food per week for several weeks, providing vital support to communities grappling with the aftermath of the disaster.

Throughout its remarkable journey, the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida has exemplified the power of compassion, resilience, and community solidarity in the fight against hunger, inspiring hope and transforming lives across the region.
