Job SummaryUnder the general direction of the Senior Director of Sponsored Programs and AVP for ORED, the Pre-Award Specialist serves as a facilitator and provides institutional oversight for all external grant/contract proposals and submittal on behalf of CSULB and its auxiliaries (i.e. Centers and Chancellor's Office).

Key Responsibilities
  • Pre-Award Grant Administration:
Provides direct guidance and assistance to faculty/staff in the preparation of grant/contract proposals and related processing requirements. Primary resource to faculty/staff for preparation of all financial aspects of grant and/or contract proposals.
  • Serves as a designated campus alternate (to AVP for Research and External Support) sponsored programs administrator for all electronic submissions to external funding sources.
  • Research: Researches, develops maintains current knowledge of electronic submission requirements and procedures for external funding sources through the internet, direct communication with sponsor personnel, or contact with research administrators at other institutions to advise, guide, and assist faculty/staff in the accurate and timely submission of proposals for external funding; investigates the availability of funding opportunities to support faculty/staff project concepts for external funding.
Knowledge Skills and AbilitiesAbility to accommodate flexible scheduling during submission deadline periods and other periods as needed. Patience and communication skills are a must. Must be able to handle various deadlines and delayed acquisition of required proposal elements.

Ability to demonstrate a strong interest in working in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment with frequent deadline pressures; highly developed communication and interpersonal skills required, including strong writing skills and the ability to interact with faculty, administrators, co-workers, and external agencies.

Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office including Access and Excel.

Must be an expert in word-processing systems to produce written communication and must be able to effectively edit and revise written content of proposals upon request; prior hand-on experience with , FastLane and other web-based proposal submission products preferred.

Must be able to prioritize work load, demonstrate a professional demeanor at all times, interact positively and cooperatively with others, and be a team player.

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse and high-level group of individuals in a diplomatic and professional manner and a strong commitment to customer service and open communication.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.

Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.

CSU Classification Salary Range:
The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,273 - $9,537 per month.
