We stand for excellence in healthcare and support our dedicated employees in achieving their highest potential through professional development, collaboration, and accountability.
Position Overview
The Cardiopulmonary Support Specialist is responsible for performing essential functions that support, treat, measure, and/or enhance the cardiopulmonary and circulatory systems of patients. This role involves advanced technical expertise in the selection, preparation, operation, and maintenance of cardiopulmonary bypass and related equipment. The Specialist collaborates closely with the attending physician in extracorporeal perfusion practices. While the primary work area is the operating room, opportunities may arise to work in other areas of the Medical Center.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver exceptional patient care by accurately conducting pre-operative assessments and developing individualized care plans based on the patient's unique conditions and co-morbidities.
- Adapt clinical plans to align with individual surgeon preferences.
- Ensure excellent patient care by preparing for procedures, selecting necessary supplies, and assembling and preparing all perfusion equipment, including cardiopulmonary bypass systems and cardioplegia delivery systems.
- Adhere to established standards of care and comply with departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of cardiopulmonary bypass equipment, anatomy, physiology, and the mechanics of cardiopulmonary bypass, utilizing electronic medical records and perfusion records effectively.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to critical situations affecting the cardiopulmonary and circulatory systems, communicating effectively with the attending surgeon.
- Make necessary adjustments in therapy based on changing conditions, including the administration of medications and blood components. Ensure that equipment is maintained and repaired according to regulatory standards and manufacturer guidelines.
- Maintain adequate supply levels and ensure availability for procedures. Take responsibility for obtaining and renewing all relevant certifications and continuing education as required by regulations and departmental policies.
- Foster a positive team environment and enhance customer service by promoting a respectful workplace, directing complaints to supervisory staff rather than discussing them with colleagues.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
Experience:
- Prior experience in perfusion is required, with ECMO experience preferred. A solid understanding of cardioplegia delivery systems, cell savers, IABP, VAD, and ECMO is essential.
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant science field.
- Graduate of an accredited training program recognized by the Accreditation Committee for Perfusion Education in conjunction with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
- Certification as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion is required. BLS certification is also necessary.
