Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary: This full-time position is in the Public Affairs Section. The physical location will be in Topeka, the Kansas City District Office, or the Wichita Regional Office, dependent upon the successful candidate and subject to prior approval by the Department Secretary. The Chief of Public Affairs reports directly to Christopher Kennedy, Department Secretary and is responsible for:

Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Planning, developing, and implementing a comprehensive marketing and communications plan that supports the mission, vision, and strategic direction.
  • Analyzing and interpreting the effectiveness of marketing and communications activities.
  • Developing metrics and recommendations to achieve public affairs objectives.
  • Serving as a trusted advisor to the Secretary and senior officials.
  • Serving as the primary agency liaison to the Governor's Office.
  • Building relationships with agency experts, external constituencies, and the media.
  • Piloting strategies to enhance the organization's reputation.
  • Serving on select committees and task forces.
  • Serving as Executive Editor of a Magazine.
  • Special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education : Education may be substituted for experience as determined by the agency.
  • Licensing & Certification : The successful candidate must pass a background check and possess a valid driver's license.
  • Minimum Qualifications : Two years of experience in planning and directing work. Education may be substituted as determined by the agency.
  • Preferred Qualifications : Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, or related field preferred.
  • Additional Qualifications/Skills/Abilities : Excellent oral and written communication skills. Tech-savvy with knowledge of digital and social media technologies. Familiarity with graphic design and project management software. Knowledge of AP-style preferred. Professionalism, discretion, and staying updated on conservation issues are necessary.
