This position does not require bilingual language skills but there is a need in the communities that we serve, and all are encouraged to apply.

Family Coaches work closely with Oregon families and work is based in the East Portland Branch and in the local community. This position is not remote.

Your duties at a glance

As a Family Coach (Human Services Case Manager), you will:

  • Conduct interviews to determine family needs and eligibility, and complete program applications for program benefits and, if eligible, issues appropriate support.
  • Engage clients in family evaluation of strengths and jointly develop a case plan and identify the steps the family will take towards self-sufficiency and meeting their basic needs.
  • Monitor progress, needs, and makes necessary modifications to the case plan.
  • Initiate and participate in case staffing, employment readiness, life skills training, and supports job search as needed.
  • Assist with crisis and safety planning for individuals experiencing domestic violence.
  • Explore alternate resources and link clients to community services and may also assist with supporting resources and services within the community.

Minimum qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in a Behavioral Science, Social Science, or a closely related field

OR

  • A Bachelor's degree in any field and one year of human services related experience (i.e., work providing assistance to individuals and groups with issues such as economically disadvantaged, employment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, prevention, health, cultural competencies, inadequate housing)

OR

  • An Associate degree in a Behavioral Science, Social Science or a closely related field AND two years of human services related experience (i.e., work providing assistance to individuals and groups with issues such as economically disadvantaged, employment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, prevention, health, cultural competencies, inadequate housing)

OR

  • Three years of human services related experience (i.e., work providing assistance to individuals and groups with issues such as economically disadvantaged, employment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, prevention, health, cultural competencies, inadequate housing).
  • Must have a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. For individuals needing an ADA accommodation to meet this requirement, you will need to be able to provide alternate method of transportation.

  • Knowledge of community resources which serve the needs of diverse and marginalized communities. Experience assisting diverse populations. Demonstrated ability to follow through with building relationships and trust with vulnerable families. (Displays a servant heart, by showing compassion and care for families experiencing emotional and financial crisis. Understanding the challenges and taking a trauma informed approach in all interactions.)
  • Experience using accepted casework methods and techniques - including information/referral, assessment, interviewing, customer advocacy, resource utilization - with commitment and follow through. Experience working jointly and collaboratively with families, community partners, co-workers, and leadership in tailoring services and reasonable case plan goals while adjusting them accordingly.
  • Experience communicating effectively, on a one-to-one basis, and in groups, to provide information and guidance or give assistance that is clear, simple, objective, concise, and unbiased.
  • Ability to research and solve complex problems. Experience in initiating and assessing matters independently and utilizing sound judgment in making trauma-informed decisions in delivering casework services to individuals, families, and groups.
  • Skills in listening without judgment, respectfully paying attention to the feelings being expressed with empathy and compassion. Demonstrated ability to seek understanding and adjust communication/feedback as appropriate to the situation at hand.
  • Successful experience organizing and putting work in priority order. Demonstrated ability to complete tasks/duties timely while also managing competing priorities, obligations, and deadlines effectively. (Has the capacity to effectively adjust to change quickly and calmly. Willingness to adapt to new or unexpected circumstances as they arise.)
  • Experience reading situations appropriately and addressing with a trauma-informed approach. (Views these moments as opportunities for growth and understanding. Ability to find common ground and gain cooperation without disruption to workflows or interpersonal relationships.)

Working conditions

  • Position is fast paced at times.
  • High volume of individual and family contact.

  • You will work with domestic violence survivors. These situations may be stressful and understanding self-care and available resources are important.
  • Employee's work is conducted in offices, participant's homes, and other community sites.
  • Hours of work may vary from day to day and may include evenings and weekends.
