As an Estimator at Valmet will primarily be responsible for performing the duties and responsibilities to support the costs of Engineering efforts within the Pulp & Paper business line, for the North American teams. The Estimator will also support and adhere to Valmet Inc. Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) goals and directives.

The candidate in this position will perform routine assignments in support of estimating the costs of the Engineer's efforts at Valmet, under the direction of the Manager, Application Engineering.

At Valmet, our goal is to provide the highest level of commitment and service to our customers by:
  • Provide order of magnitude cost estimates based on historical costs in support of business developments efforts to secure bid opportunities.
  • Provide pricing for budgetary estimates for new project opportunities using historical data from previous projects.
  • Development of detailed firm cost estimates by:
Reviewing quantity takeoffs and comparing to historical data. Recommending proposed construction methods. Soliciting and analyzing supplier quotations. Soliciting and analyzing subcontract quotations. Preparation of in-house estimates for suppliers and subcontractor's scope. Check documents for compliance with engineering data, scope, and commercial positions. Ensure proposal document accuracy, define, and protect the cost estimate. Provide a contingency analysis based on the level of engineering information available, supplier and

subcontractor pricing coverage, site conditions, labor survey, and schedule impact.
  • Act as the focal point for all pricing matters during the estimate preparation phase of the proposal development.
  • Coordinate meetings with Subcontractors/Suppliers (through Supply Management) and in-house personnel, as required, during the proposal phase.
  • In conjunction with Project Controls, participate in the formulation of the project cash-flow plan.
  • Obtain the required signatures for completed estimates according to the established corporate approval procedures.
  • Prepares project budget based on the as sold document and the final estimate and sales price.
  • Develops and maintains a costing database for proprietary and auxiliary equipment supplied to these market areas.
  • Develop and maintain estimating trend charts required to effectively evaluate and manage the Cost Management function, such as commodity purchase prices, typical unit cost rates, project percent cost breakdown, etc.
  • Develop and maintain standard estimating formats.
  • Maintain departmental files in accordance with corporate guidelines.

Requirements:

Well qualified candidate should have a minimum of an associate degree, preferred bachelor's degree (BS/BA.) with an Engineering background from four-year College or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Basic knowledge of Pulp and Paper industry. Preferred five to eight years' experience.

The ideal candidate should also Possess: strong knowledge of cost estimate procedures and project management; have strong written/oral communication, interpersonal and organizational skills; strong leadership skills; and strong negotiation and knowledge of the industry. Must be self-motivated and work with minimal supervision and is capable of handling multiple and changing priorities.
