Job Description:

SUMMARY

Working under the direction of the Park & Play Coordinator, the incumbent leads programs that promote fun, safety and learning base. Plans, leads, and helps staff to execute activities. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Accepts the responsibility of Park & Play Leader and site assignment;
  • Leads by example for the staff and participants;
  • Reports directly to Park & Play Coordinator;
  • Attends seasonal Employee Safety training (Bloodborne, Hazardous Communication);
  • Attends in-service Training Orientation and other meetings when necessary;
  • Assists in planning, leading, executing and evaluating daily recreational activities such as games, art & crafts, recreational sports, special events, special scheduled rotating programs, tournaments, story hours, field trips, family fun carnivals, and special events;
  • Organizes, helps teach, and instruct recreational sports, games, art and ALL other activities and programs at the playground site;
  • Encourages all the children to participate in the activities scheduled to take place in the program;
  • Meets with Park & Play Coordinator to discuss daily activities, programs, participation numbers, new ideas, and daily happenings in the park;
  • Responsible for daily and weekly paper work accuracy and ensuring the recording of attendance in each activity/program is taking place;
  • Maintains and keeps updated registration files for all of our participants;
  • Is responsible for maintaining discipline among participants;
  • Is responsible for equipment and supplies ensure they are used properly and maintained;
  • Works in ANY areas as needed (ALL staff);
  • Keeps accurate records of daily and weekly attendance to be turned in. Completes a monthly report about the programs/activities and highs and lows of their site;
  • Availability to work extended hours in the evening or weekends as needed for special events;
  • Participate in getting the community involved for your specific site;
  • Participates in a mid-way and final personnel evaluation;
  • Promotes program with distribution of flyers in surrounding neighborhoods and works with site volunteers, outreach programs and neighborhood volunteers;
  • Complies with dress code for the Park & Play program; Staff must wear T-shirt (provided to all staff), gym shoes/closed toe shoes and appropriate length shorts;
  • Ensures each staff member completes his/her timecard accurately and submits time card to Park & Play Supervisor;
  • Checks the park and surrounding areas, pick up trash, sticks, etc., and reports irregularities and abnormal conditions to the Park & Play Supervisor;
  • Communicates daily and in a professional manner with upper management, supervisor, co-workers, participants, parents, volunteers and patrons of the park;
  • Performs duties in accordance with the City's safety rules and operating regulations and practices;
  • Document playground incidents on incident report and contact the supervisor as soon as possible with any problems;
Those aged 16 or 17 years old will help to oversee younger age groups under the supervision of adult staff.
  • These staff will only help assist, under the supervision of an adult staff member, manage and carry out programming
  • Attend staff meetings as required;
  • Does not drive a City Vehicle;
Help in other Park facilities and programs as assigned.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The incumbent is responsible to manage their performance in accordance with this job description and the performance expectations provided to them by management. If at any time the incumbent is unsure of their role or specific responsibilities, it is the incumbent's responsibility to refer to their job description and ask for clarification from their supervisor. Management will work with the incumbent, as needed, to ensure performance expectations are clearly communicated and performance goals are achieved.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Park & Play will supervise all children participating in the playground activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • College degree in education or a field related to working with children in recreation preferred;
  • Minimum of High School Diploma or GED equivalent;
  • At least 18 years of age;
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES
  • Must have transportation available at all times;
  • Must have good leadership, organizational and communication skills and like working with children of all ages;
  • Must be of impeccable moral and ethical character;
LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS -Required for Continued Employment
  • Valid Indiana Driver's License if a City vehicle is used.
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR by the American Heart Association within two weeks of employment (provided by the City's Risk Management Department).
