Position Summary

Firefighter/EMT's undergeneral supervision perform fire prevention, fire suppression,hazardous material incident response and emergency rescue andmedical assistance duties to protect life and property; performsrelated responsibilities asrequired.

Responsibilities:

Customer Service
  • Conduct fire safety,home safety, fire extinguisher and pre-fire planning inspections
  • Provide information to the public, installsmoke detectors, conduct station tours, visit schools, andparticipate in public education standbys.
  • Work involves serving the public.
  • Workrequires cooperative/supportive interaction with co-workers,supervisors, doctors and other healthcare workers.
  • Work requires interaction withrepresentatives of other City departments, other fire departmentsand local, state and federal agencies.

Fire Suppression
  • Performs firesuppression duties by responding to emergency fire alarms.
  • Assists in the suppression of structural,residential, commercial, industrial, chemical, petroleum, vehicle,aircraft and Wildland fires; applying the appropriate extinguishingagents to the source of the fire.
  • Operatesvarious pieces of fire equipment and gear for fire suppression andcontrol; drives and operates fire apparatus; search and rescue;ventilation and salvage operations.
  • Provideswritten reports detailing specific firefighting and rescue actionstaken on scene.

Emergency Medical Services
  • Responds to emergency medical callsby evaluating situations.
  • Provides emergencyand non-emergency medical procedures both on scene and in a movingvehicle.
  • Transfers patients to medicalfacilities.
  • Treat patients in accordance withestablished Emergency Medical Service Protocols and Rural/MetroFire Department policy.
  • Provide writtenreports detailing patient care

Communications
  • Portable radios are used as a meansof communication.
  • Must conduct all radiocommunications in a professional, respectful manner.

Maintenance
  • Conduct daily andweekly vehicle and equipment inspections as assigned.
  • Ensure all vehicle and equipmentdiscrepancies are documented and reported to the on-duty FireCaptain.

Training
  • Participate in allrequired training sessions, including, but not limited to; livefire drills, performance evaluation drills, ongoing skillsmaintenance, practice and training, annual OSHA drills, EMS majorskills and any other mandatory Company training.

Compliance
  • Reviews paperworkfor accuracy and correct process.
  • Implementscorrective/preventive measures as determined by the CorporateCompliance/Audit Committee.
  • Cooperates withInternal Audit, Compliance and HR on any recommendations andchanges to compliance and legal workflow issues.
  • Complies and enforces all policies andprocedures.
  • Must successfully complete allrequired Compliance Training within the required time period.
  • Must have no compliance related correctiveaction during the current review period.

Qualifications:
  • IL certified BOF
  • If assigned to an airport operation - State,IFSAC, ProBoard or FAA Airport Firefighter certification.
  • State issued Registered EMT-B
  • Current CPR/AED certification.
  • Valid driver license with acceptable drivingrecord in accordance with Rural/Metro policy. DUI within last 5years is disqualifying.
  • Able to work anyassigned shift, including nights, holidays and weekends.
  • Available to work overtime as assigned and asneeded on an emergency basis.
  • Must meet localstandards pertaining to qualifications, training and/or eligibilityfor hiring placement or promotion.

Education Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED required.
