** Cover letter required for all positions and optional for facilities, campus services, and hospitality positions unless otherwise specified.Job Description SummaryThinking strategically and proactively, the Director of Advancement & External Affairs plans, manages and implements efforts to support Reynolda through a comprehensive fundraising and promotion program that elevates institutional relevancy, community awareness, and the mission of Reynolda House Museum of American Art and Reynolda Gardens. The Director is responsible for all fundraising, strategic advancement in marketing, earned revenue through admissions and retail, and Reynolda-hosted event planning efforts for both House and Gardens. The Director will develop fundraising strategies for support from individuals, corporations, and foundations, as well as establish goals and strategies for growth in visitation, admissions, membership, annual fund contributions, and Museum Shop and Reynolda Welcome Center revenues. This supervisory role inspires Advancement and Marketing & Communications staff including the teams associated with these areas–all of whom are essential to engaging visitors across the spectrum of Reynolda House and Reynolda Gardens.

The Director will provide guidance on the implementation and management of an integrated marketing program that effectively communicates the mission and cultural leadership of historic Reynolda to a broad range of constituencies. This role supervises the strategic alignment of Reynolda’s marketing and communication plans with key performance indicators associated with the vision of Reynolda and annual financial and operating goals. This supervisor imagines and implements dynamic strategies to ensure that Reynolda is evolving with visitors, reaching revenue aspirations, and cultivating collaborative and inclusive environments.Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Increase contributed and earned revenue annually by approximately 10% on average by driving awareness, visitation, admission, membership, donor engagement, major gifts, and sponsorships (and their benefits).

  • Provide guidance in the development and implementation of intentional, strategic, and effective marketing campaigns for all aspects of Reynolda that support brand identity and articulate its contributions to the greater Winston-Salem community area and beyond.

  • Ensure institutional marketing strategies align with strategic vision and revenue goals to achieve audience development, fundraising and membership initiatives, admissions growth, and group tour sales.

  • Guide and support growth in retail store sales in the Museum Shop and Reynolda Welcome Center.

  • Develop compelling case statements for future investment in Reynolda.

  • Build strong relationships with key donors including individuals, companies, foundations, and other cultural organizations.

  • Work closely with Reynolda Board of Directors to fundraise and encourage their personal giving and serve as the staff liaison to the Board Advancement, Membership and Marketing Committee.

  • Use the Vision for Reynolda strategic plan as a tool to advance goals across the organization and ensure all key annual milestones are met.

  • Work closely with the Executive Director to secure major gift opportunities with a focus on potential named positions or spaces for individuals, companies, and foundations.

  • Ensure that celebratory events (within operational limitations), such as galas and exhibition openings are memorable and inspiring for stakeholders.

  • Build collegial and mutually beneficial relationships seeking out opportunities for collaboration and shared goals across the Advancement and Communications teams, the President’s cabinet, and with key departments at Wake Forest University, the parent organization for Reynolda.

  • Manage and/or support budget and financial planning activities for the Advancement and Communications departments.

  • Relaunch Reynolda’s donor travel program to deepen donor relationships and grow revenue.

  • Provide counsel and support to Museum spokespersons (senior leadership, board members) on interactions with media and crisis communications. Strengthen media partnerships, with emphasis on building relationships with national art and gardens media outlets.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • BA/BS degree required; MA degree preferred.

  • Minimum eight to ten years institutional advancement, fundraising, marketing and public relations experience. Prefer a background in fundraising and marketing program management in an art museum or related non-profit educational or arts institution.

  • Experience and knowledge of non-profit fundraising, marketing, and communications principles that have clearly articulated goals and measurable outcomes.

  • Strategic planning, donor and sponsor relationship management and sponsor benefit fulfillment.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Experience in managing, motivating, and evaluating direct reports.

  • Ability to function collegially, model exceptional leadership, and serve as a member of Reynolda’s senior leadership team.

  • Knowledge of advertising and media, including print, radio, TV, newspaper, and online mediums.

  • Outstanding interpersonal and community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within diverse constituents.

  • Ability to think creatively and strategically to align donors’ interests with Reynolda’s fundraising needs.

  • Ability to prepare and analyze data so that an effective story can be shared; develop and deliver presentations and stewardship reports.

  • Confidence and proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, including Docs, Sheets, and Slides, Deacon Advancement Database (Wake Forest’s Blackbaud CRM), Altru, Excel, and social media.

  • Willingness to engage in professional development in the spirit of continuous improvement at Reynolda.

  • Ability to organize workflow, manage projects and people, and meet deadlines.

  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by the demands of the position.

  • Familiarity with non-profit art museums and gardens best practices and trends in the field.

  • Be an active participant in the cultural life of Winston-Salem by representing Reynolda at events, programs and opportunities at peer institutions.

  • Ability to travel.

  • Should be able to meet the requirements of the University’s automobile insurance policy.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises the following staff positions including reviewing performance, promotions or discharges, overseeing annual work and budget planning and ensuring that appropriate policies and procedures are adhered to. Supervises: Marketing and Communications Director, Visitor Experience and Donor Records Manager, Membership Manager, Grants & Stewardship Manager, Retail Manager, Event and Program Manager and the respective full-time and part-time staff positions associated with these managers.
