Position Summary

Basic Function:

Directs the activities of several program areas within the Division of Student Life and Engagement. Ensures the development of educational programs and activities are supported to offer a positive environment for students and their families on or off campus. Consults, advises, and refers MSU students, their families, and the community to resources available to students in their quest to graduate and beyond graduation.

Characteristic Duties – Responsibilities:

Directs the development and implementation of co-curricular educational programs and services that complement and supplement the academic programs of the University. Programs and services include the Religious, Spiritual, and Secular Support and Services (RSSI), Women*s Student Services (WSS), and Global Justice Education and Outreach.Effectively manages the financial, human, mental, and physical resources available for student religious activities, student/women activities, student government, and global/social activities and engagement through programs, activities, social events, and educational workshops.Provides leadership and support for the development of programs that promote understanding and appreciation for students to help support academic achievement and support students in global, religious, and women’s needs/interest.Formulates and implements objectives, policies, and procedures for evaluating programs and organizational effectiveness.Works closely with student organizations and programs on matters of interest for all students at the University.Recruits, hires, supervises, and evaluates the staff for the RSSI, WSS, and Global Justice programs and services.Development, training, and presentation of resources offered within RSSI, WSS, and Global Justice students and their organizations, MAUs and their staff and the public.Research, design, develop and communicate in areas of current social issues that affect the student’s academic success in areas of student government, women, religious and global interest/issues.Represents the Assistant Vice President on various University committees where matters of religious, global, women, and student government are of concern.Interacts and works collaboratively with Deans, Department Chairs, and other members of the University community to enhance the overall climate for students.Interacts and works collaboratively with departments within the Division of Student Life and Engagement, the Office of the Provost, and cultural issues.Works with various units to develop policies and procedures for student groups and to implement major University activities.

Communication:

Assistant Vice President of Student Life and Engagement for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging - to implement process and guidelines, set priorities, problem solve, share reports, data, budget analysis, and collect information.Provost Office, academic administrators (including Assistant Deans), and department chairs - Serve on committees, consult on or plan programs and activities.University staff/departments - to plan, consult, problem solve, share information, and plan programs.Support staff - to provide direction, assist with problems, reports, resources, and financial requests/allocations.Student Organizations - to provide advice, share information regarding academic governance matters and issues.Public - to provide information and relay resources available to students, families, and veteran associations.

Responsibility for the Work of Others:

May provide first or second level supervision over regular employees and first level supervision over student employees.

Responsibility for the Health and Safety of Others:

Student Life and Engagement staff are responsible for the physical, mental, social, and academic development of a student’s success at the University and is responsible for reporting any concerns in these areas to the appropriate office/department to receive necessary assistance.

Impacts on Programs/Services/Operations:

Failure to effectively direct the department activities and poor communication with other key units regarding student activities could result in ineffective and conflicting programs and negative reactions to the Division.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which would normally be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelors degree work such as a master’s in higher education administration; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in student affairs programs and services, an understanding of the formal and informal organizational structures, academic governance procedures, and informal organization structures specific to the university, computer technology, training and development programs, designing and developing research projects and in supervising staff and office operations, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
