UA Campaign Director

Position Summary

University Advancement (UA) at Michigan State University (MSU) seeks an experienced, creative, and innovative leader for the position of Campaign Director. This position plays an important role in promoting the unit’s mission and achievements by overseeing the university’s next comprehensive, multi-billion-dollar campaign.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for University Advancement, the Campaign Director is responsible for leading, strategizing, developing, executing, and managing campaign operations in alignment with MSU and UA’s vision, mission, and strategic priorities. The Campaign Director should have a demonstrated understanding of fundraising at the major and principal gift level, and experience with managing volunteer committees/boards, working with senior leadership, and managing complex projects. Expertise with large university comprehensive campaigns (preferably of $1 billion or more) is preferred.

Primary responsibilities of the position include:

Strategy & Execution:

  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the campaign, including development and oversight of a strategic campaign plan (goals, timeline, volunteer structure, budget, staffing, communications planning, campaign outreach and events, and donor recognition strategies).
  • Collaborates with Senior Advancement Leadership Team (SALT) and constituency development teams to ensure college/unit campaign strategies and goals align with the overall campaign.
  • Collaborates with SALT and other key stakeholders to assist in defining and/or updating university-wide policies and procedures regarding comprehensive campaign practices.
  • Works in partnership with the Senior Director of Marketing and Communication to ensure that case statements across all 28 colleges and units are in alignment with fundraising priorities.
  • Manages the development of unit campaign priorities including the development of transformational ideas for MSU.
  • Serves as the main liaison with MSU’s campaign counsel.

Reporting & Analysis:

  • Conducts detailed data analysis on campaign goals/objectives.
  • Provides regular reports of campaign progress to goal for the VPUA and other stakeholders.
  • Utilizes data and performance reports to develop campaign strategies.
  • Tracks and maintains accurate financial records of campaign costs against annual budget allocation.

Engagement & Communication:

  • Builds and executes a robust campaign leadership volunteer structure for the campaign, including strategies and tactics for successful and meaningful volunteer engagement. Including recruitment, onboarding, staffing, and evaluation and manages central campaign volunteers.
  • Develops a strategy for regular engagement with college/unit development councils.
  • Provides regular updates to various stakeholders on campaign goals and current campaign status.
  • Assists the Senior Director of Marketing and Communication to deploy campaign branding across the university.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing and/or Business; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in professional and higher education fundraising, public relations, marketing, development of budgets, preparation and presentation of case statements and analysis of operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a master's degree program in English, journalism, public relations, marketing, telecommunications or communications, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in nonprofit fundraising, higher education advancement or in a field which corresponds to the particular department of employment.
  • Excellent oral, written, and digital communication skills.
  • Experience in large university campaigns (preferably $1 billion or more).
  • Experience working with donors and demonstrated knowledge of development, including moves management.
  • Significant skills in complex project management.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in working with a nonprofit CRM database to achieve goals.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to be an adaptable, decisive, and systematic critical thinker.
  • Experience as a frontline fundraiser, working directly with alumni and donors.
  • Experience in the delivery of visual and graphic content and presentations and knowledge of best practices for communication to diverse audiences.
  • Advanced knowledge of CRM software (i.e. Salesforce) and Microsoft Office products.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
