Overview

PPPL is seeking a lead design analyst for one year term assignment to support the National Spherical Torus Experiment - Upgrade (NSTX-U) project modification and/or design change tasks reports to and receives functional direction from the PPPL Engineering Department and is matrixed to the NSTX-U Recovery Project; the NSTX-U Project Engineer provides project direction. The lead analyst provides engineering hands-on analytical or numerical analysis support for the timely execution and completion of the assigned work in accordance with approved analysis tasks focused on validation of component or system design modifications and reviews, per PPPL policies, programs and procedures including lab wide training and Engineering Department design change control requirements.

Responsibilities

This position is a one year TERM position. We will be offering benefits and PTO. 

 

Core Duties: 

  • Perform targeted analytical and numerical analysis tasks per the targeted design modifications.
  • Reviews existing documents (e.g., material property database, calculation reports, CAD and finite element models used for component analyses) to make necessary modification and revision/update based on engineering change request needs or in-field non-conformance findings.
  • Leads conformance review between design model and analysis reports to ensure consistency.
  • Report and document analysis results that are necessary per NSTX-U modifications and through direct observation and ensure that
    • Requirements are met and procedures are being followed.
    • Modifications are being verified by appropriate analysis in accordance with acceptance criteria, design allowables, and specifications.
    • Design modification is justified with an appropriate level of analysis and consistent progress made per project costs and schedules.
  • Identifies and calls for timely action for the Project Engineering team to correct potential clashes/ interferences during reassembly of inconsistent observations in existing and/or newly proposed design changes.
  • Interfaces and coordinates with support organizations (e.g., engineering, QA/QC, and project engineering team) and provides recommended Non-conformance change dispositions.
  • Reviews and reports to the Project Engineer team analytical results for sound justification of design changes.
  • Reviews and reports to the project engineer team post-modification inconsistent implementations.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Mechanics (advanced is degree preferred).
  • 10+ years’ experience with design, analytical and numerical analysis of mechanical systems and component modifications in industry or Department of Energy national laboratories or equivalent, highly regulated work environments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Work will be on the PPPL campus, full time.
  • Competency in analytical methods in engineering, ANSYS or other multi-physics analysis tools, familiar with ANSYS Spaceclaim, Solidworks, or CREO software.
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Certificates and Licenses: 

  • ANSYS or other multi-physics analysis tool/suite desirable.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Must be able to perform physically demanding work, including lifting up to 50 pounds without medical restrictions.
  • Must be able to work near static magnetic fields without medical restrictions.
  • Must be capable of climbing ladders and working at heights from scaffolding, platforms and powered aerial lifts.

Working Conditions: 

  • Shift and weekend work may be possible.
