Responsibilities:

Core Duties

Functional Safety Engineering (70%):

Define and supervise maintenance, testing, and repair operations on safety and operational systems. Develop comprehensive procedures, specifications, diagrams, and training materials to guarantee safe and dependable operation throughout the systems' lifecycle.

Oversee operator training, operational activities, and troubleshooting for safety and interlock systems, including safety-class PLC-based access control, fixed gas detection systems, and various safety measures in support of experimental plasma research.

Ensure that all procedures, diagrams, and technical documentation related to the systems are precise and up-to-date, adhering to stringent management of change and configuration management protocols.

This role will primarily focus on supporting National Spherical Torus eXperiment Upgrade (NSTX-U) systems, while also providing assistance for smaller experiments at PPPL.

Engineering Operations Support (30%):

The individual in this position will be expected to train for operational roles such as NSTX-U Chief Operating Engineer and D-Site Shift Supervisor.

Coordinate the startup, routine operation, and shutdown of various high-power, unique pressure, vacuum, and electrical systems.

Manage the operation of the NSTX-U device, including the initiation of each operational pulse.

Ensure that operations remain within the safety parameters established for the facility.

Respond to fault conditions affecting NSTX-U operations and safety protocols.

Facilitate effective communication among the operational team.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, or a related engineering discipline is required.

8+ years of experience in an industrial, military, or national laboratory experimental research environment is preferred.

5+ years of experience in functional or machinery safety engineering is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to collaborate with a diverse range of individuals, from maintenance personnel to research partners, is essential.

Familiarity with Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) and electrical safety standards as per NFPA 70E is advantageous.

Proficiency in applying functional safety standards IEC 61508/61511 is expected.

Experience with radiological safety measures, such as nuclear shielding, is beneficial.

Competence in preparing technical documentation, including operational, maintenance, and installation procedures, as well as electrical schematics, is desirable.

Ability to effectively interface with a broad spectrum of scientific and technical personnel.

Certifications and Licenses:

Demonstrated proficiency in functional or machinery safety engineering through industry certification is preferred, including:

  • Exida Functional Safety Professional (FSP)
  • Certified Functional Safety Professional (CFSP)
  • Certified Functional Safety Expert (CFSE)
  • UV FS Engineer
  • B11 Licenses Machinery Safety Specialist (LMSS)

Physical Requirements:

Full or corrected vision, including depth and color perception, with occasional close work and ability to work in low light conditions.

Full hand, arm, and leg dexterity and coordination.

Ability to work near static magnetic fields without medical restrictions.

Capability to climb ladders and engage in continuous walking, standing, or sitting.

Work in environments with standard industrial hazards, including confined spaces and elevated areas, where electrically/mechanically energized equipment may be present.

Regular use of protective clothing and equipment, primarily hard hats, safety glasses, and electrical PPE.

Working Conditions:

Most work will be conducted at PPPL facilities, with vendor visits required for ongoing projects.

Work will typically be during the first shift, though second shift work may be necessary based on facility schedules.
