Overview:

The Director of Finance, Operations and Talent is a member of the school’s senior management team and provides leadership and direction for all financial, operational and talent acquisition functions for the School of Medicine. It is expected that this leader will encompass a broad view toward all School of Medicine resources to support the school’s mission, vision, and strategic plan. In order to take advantage of emerging educational opportunities, the director will support the Dean in strategic business opportunity evaluation and development in conjunction with university and partner health systems. Reporting to the Dean, the director is a key member of the Dean’s Office and is expected to work readily and effectively with all members in achieving the goals and objectives. Areas of responsibility include budget and finance, facilities, information technology, research administration, talent acquisition and leadership development. This person serves as the liaison between the School of Medicine and the corresponding financial, operations and personnel offices and staff within the University.

Finance

  • Develop and oversee the short and long-term implementation of financial policies, procedures, and functions of the School of Medicine; ensure that these conform to appropriate University policies and procedures and meet all relevant accreditation standards.
  • Responsible for the financial viability and success of the organization providing both short- and long-term high level strategic modeling.
  • Develop and deliver complex, comprehensive financial analyses, and provide financial guidance to assist senior leadership decisions including development of business cases and models to support entrepreneurial initiatives.
  • Direct and coordinate the preparation of the School of Medicine operating budget and capital budget in accordance with the University annual budget process.
  • Direct all School of Medicine purchasing, accounts payable and payroll functions.
  • Responsible for regulatory reporting requirements and other requests related to fiscal analysis and reporting, inclusive of tracking of Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation compliance.
  • Responsible for research finance administration, as the school’s research portfolio increases.

Operations

  • Work in collaboration with the Director of Administration to participate in strategic initiatives and continuous quality improvement efforts for the School of Medicine.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with School of Medicine deans and departmental leadership to identify, model, implement, and monitor program resource needs.
  • Direct and manage space analysis and allocation processes. Resolve problems and issues across a wide variety of functions, while identifying opportunities to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of use of space.
  • Responsible for the review, consultation, and execution of all School of Medicine contracts.
  • Responsible for the review, consultation, execution, and accreditation compliance for all school of medicine contractual relationships outside of the university.
  • Negotiate and manage programmatic and resource needs as they relate to clinical affiliates and community partner agreements and operations.
  • Serve as School of Medicine Information Technology liaison to ensure that all administrative, programmatic, and operational technology requirements are met and addressed.

Talent Acquisition

  • Serve as the primary liaison between departments, school of medicine search committees and university human resources, providing both leadership and oversight throughout the hiring process.
  • Provide strategic guidance regarding faculty and staff financial compensation, including performance-based metrics.
  • Partner with appropriate department leadership on employee promotion and compensation, inclusive of analysis and adjustments, in partnership with university human resources.
  • Support the school of medicine’s strategic plan working with department leaders to forecast staffing needs.
  • Develop those in leadership positions and in the leadership pipeline.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean.
Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in Business, Finance and/or Accounting.
  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant CPA preferred.
Qualifications:Demonstrated record of effective leadership in finance and budget, and in resource planning. Outstanding financial expertise and related technical skills, including a deep knowledge of financial operations and compliance issues. Experience working in a medical school or academic medical center highly preferred.   High-level experience in the financial management of a complex organization; university or health care environment preferred but not required. Proven ability to exercise good judgement in complex situations. Experience managing and communicating change. Approachable, inclusive, and transparent leadership style.
