Faculty - Department of Surgery, Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery (Open Rank/Track)
The Ohio State University College of Medicine and the Wexner Medical Center seek a PhD or MD/PhD researcher to join the Department of Surgery, Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery. Academic rank and track commensurate with academic record and experience.
Position Overview
The Department of Surgery at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) and the James Comprehensive Cancer Center are recruiting an open-rank faculty member with a basic or translational science research focus in colorectal cancer. Expertise in oncogenesis, treatment resistance, microbial interactions, bioinformatics, drug discovery, or immunotherapy is a plus. Candidates are expected to have an established research program with a successful record of publications and extramural funding. The opportunity will take advantage of an extensive internal collaborative network of researchers in the University and Cancer Center and will benefit from clinical collaborations and access to human specimens.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conceptualizes, plans, designs, implements and conducts research studies; develops and writes grant proposals to seek and obtain extramural funding to support research program; obtains and maintains NIH R01 or equivalent funding;
- Writes and publishes research in high quality peer reviewed, scientific journals; attends and makes presentations of research at national and international scientific conferences; develops national and international scholarly reputation;
- Instructs and mentors junior scientists, doctoral and postdoctoral students, medical students, residents and fellow trainees; participates in department, college and university committees and initiatives.
Requirements
- PhD or MD/PhD in an applicable field
- Postdoctoral research experience in basic science research
- Proven ability to write scientific reports and publish in scientific, peer-reviewed journals preferred
- Current, active extramural grant funding (equivalent to NIH R01)
- Academic experience a plus
- Qualify for academic appointment at the Assistant, Associate or Professor level – Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with previous training and experience
Department/Division Overview
The Department of Surgery, led by Dr. Timothy Pawlik, boasts a broad array of clinical, research and educational opportunities. The department is home to multiple R01 funded researchers, several training grants, and with over $15.5M in NIH funding, was ranked #11 in the Blue Ridge Rankings among departments of surgery nationally. Our investigators collectively occupy over 25,000 square feet of laboratory space within and around the medical center campus.
The Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Ohio State is recognized for our patient care related to diseases and cancer of the colon and rectum. We have earned a procedure rating of “high performing” for Colon Cancer Surgery by U.S. News & World Report. Every surgeon within the division is dedicated to practicing within their specific area of expertise. This intense dedication has yielded a high volume of cases and increased our experience levels with even the most unusual and complex surgical cases within our specialties.

Tenure faculty (regardless of rank) - persons with the titles of professor, associate professor, assistant professor, and instructor who serve on appointments totaling 50% or more service to the university and are eligible for tenure or have obtained tenure. Duties and responsibilities are assigned under the workload guidelines in the administration pattern of each faculty member’s tenure initiation unit (TIU) and, as appropriate, regional campus; obligations will include research, service, and/or teaching or clinical practice. These faculty will have earned a doctorate or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study or possess equivalent experience.
Additional Information:Faculty Defined
Clinical faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with titles of assistant professor-clinical, associate professor-clinical and professor-clinical. These faculty will have earned a doctor of medicine (MD), doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field. Clinical faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of three to five years. They may be reappointed to successive terms. Their principal career focus is the delivery of exemplary clinical care, and may include teaching, and/or research.
Tenure-Track faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Their primary career focus centers on research, service, and teaching. Tenure-track faculty with MD or MD/PhD degrees may also be involved in clinical care.
Research Faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of research assistant professor, research associate professor, or research professor. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Research faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of one to five years. Their principal career focus is research.
