Primary Purpose: The Director of Professional Engagement leads the strategy and work of the Office of Professional Engagement, setting the pace, establishing content and methodology and collaborating as needed and appropriate with other student facing departments and with faculty. The Director of Professional Engagement implements the College of Law's efforts under ABA standard 303(b) and 303(c), prioritizing authentic student engagement and a strong sense of belonging on campus. The Director of Professional Engagement must pay particular attention to creating an inclusive community that serves the needs of a diverse student population.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist the Associate Dean for Assessment and Professional engagement in developing and executing the College of Law’s Professional Identity Formation Program. Report to and work closely with Associate Dean for Assessment & Professional Engagement in development and execution of the College of Law’s professional identity formation program under ABA Standards 303(b) and (c); Work closely with the Assistant Dean for Career and Professional Development and the faculty to ensure development and cross-campus buy-in of a robust program for professional identity formation. Implement and operationalize a reliable and coherent program for professional identity formation. This may include, among other things, planning, coordinating, and promoting events and meetings (including coordinating with outside vendors); providing robust support for student peer mentoring; creating and/or teaching courses, workshops, or individual class sessions on issues and topics relevant to professional identity formation and/or cross-cultural competency; providing feedback to students on work created as part of professional identity formation and development of cross-cultural competency; Collect data about and maintain a library and informational resources related to emerging trends, issues, and practices in professional identity formation in the industry and in other related fields. Establish measurable goals, benchmarks, progress milestones, and other performance management tools to engage support and reinforce investments; Establish institutional expertise in this critical and visible arena, becoming an expert and presenting work and progress in forums where it is discussed; Work with the Office of Career and Professional Development to ensure that employer perceptions and expectations are aligned with Professional Identity Formation standards and objectives and seek opportunities to externalize the College of Law’s professional identity formation practices for the benefit of practicing lawyers. Work with the Office of Student Affairs to ensure that student organizations, events, and initiatives are aligned with and supported by Professional Identity Formation goals and standards. Promote a sense of belonging among students through targeted programming, including overseeing a regular program of activities; Develop, maintain, and assist in developing and maintaining relationships with sponsors and potential sponsors for professional identity formation programming; Meet regularly with key constituencies regarding shared concerns; Support university and college officials with federal and accreditation compliance; Collaborate with other student-facing departments to ensure critical support for initiatives, consistency of messaging and language across functions, and clarity of purpose and method; Assist with strategic planning for the College of Law; Provide recommendations and draft new policies, and amend existing policies, as needed; Manage and administer Office of Professional Engagement budget and process expenses; Serve on assigned departmental committees and represent the Office of Professional Engagement on campus-wide committees; Assist in planning and administration of new and upper-level student orientations; Maintain on-call emergency response status in the event of emergency activities affecting the College of Law; Maintain a collaborative work environment and work well with others; Other duties as assigned.
Required SkillsQualifications: Juris Doctor strongly preferred; if no JD, then equivalent educational attainment. Law practice and/or related employment experience in a Higher Education discipline, teaching/coaching/leadership experience, or other professional development experience required. Other qualifications include: Ability and drive to form positive relationships with and effectively work with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff on two law campuses. Ability and willingness to work irregular and flexible hours, including nights and weekends. Potential for and interest in leadership in campus operations. A high degree of professionalism, discretion, and excellent judgment in difficult situations. Exceptional oral, written, organizational, communication and presentation skills. Ability to supervise others and set a positive tone, project a professional and positive image of the College of Law and University. Strong time management skills, positive attitude, and ability to juggle multiple priorities. Commitment to building an environment that promotes and facilitates inclusive excellence.
