Recognizing the need to address escalating socio-political conflicts and to equip young people with the skills necessary to address these challenges, the Associate Director of Civic Action & Dialogue will coordinate and facilitate dialogue-based programs, develop and administer social action trainings and programming at Stetson, and oversee several elements of departmental outreach to current and prospective students. The Associate Director will report directly through the Center for Community Engagement and indirectly to the Hal S. Marchman Chair of Civic & Social Responsibility, and will work closely with the Office of Diversity & Inclusion and the Office of Religious & Spiritual Life in order to meet these responsibilities. The Associate Director directly supervises a Graduate Assistant for Engaged Citizenship and manages an operational budget of approximately $40,000/year.

This is a full-time, grant-funded position with an expected duration from July 2024 through July 2027. While there are efforts underway to permanently fund this position beyond July 2027, no guarantee of funding beyond July 2027 can currently be made.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Employment duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Recruit, train, and supervise the Graduate Assistant for Engaged Citizenship
  • Work with the Director to plan and lead staff meetings, trainings, retreats, professional development, and strategic planning
  • Maintain a strong working relationship with the Ginsburg Family Foundation (GFF), including preparing annual reports to GFF, attending meetings and selected events sponsored by GFF, and participating in GFF special initiatives
  • Plan, execute, attend, evaluate, and improve dialogue-based programming that increases student knowledge of and capacity for critical discourse around challenging topics with people who may be different than them; programs include established dialogues such as “Things We Don’t Talk About At Dinner”, “Great Minds Who Don’t Think Alike”, “Flash Panels”, “Ask Big Questions”, and “Deliberative Dialogues”, and should be coordinated with appropriate student, faculty, staff, and community partners who have a pedagogical interest in the format or topic and who can increase attendance and effectiveness of the programs
  • Under the leadership of the Marchman Chair for Civic & Social Responsibility, support the development, administration, and facilitation of social action trainings and programming for college students that increases their knowledge of and capacity for effective civic action around social and economic issues in our community; programs include the “Social Action Leadership Academy” training series for current Stetson students and should be coordinated with a goal of getting participating Stetson students more engaged in our community
  • Under the leadership of the Marchman Chair for Civic & Social Responsibility, support the development, administration, and facilitation of social action trainings and programming for high school students that increases their knowledge of and capacity for effective civic action around social and economic issues in our community; programs include the “Summer Youth Institute for Social Action” multi-day summer camp for high school students and should be coordinated with a goal of getting participating high school students to apply to Stetson University and programs within our community engagement ecosystem (e.g., Bonner Program, WISE Program, Honors Program)
  • Through the GA for Engaged Citizenship, oversee several elements of departmental outreach to current and prospective students, including staffing CCE tables at events and expos (e.g., Admissions Open Houses, Student Org Fairs, and Community Expos), posting opportunities to our GivePulse/Engage/HatterJobs platforms, connecting targeted campus populations (e.g., Athletics, Greeks, and targeted student organizations and residence halls) to appropriate community engagement opportunities, and following-up with individual students who indicate an interest in community engagement
  • Assist with coordination of signature campus-wide events each year, including:
    • Values Day every Fall
    • MLK Week of Action every Spring
  • Serve as a consultant on dialogue-based programming and social action pedagogies to academic departments looking to incorporate those pedagogies into courses or programs that are part of their workload
  • Support the building and maintenance of relationships with community partner organizations while matching students with capacity-building internship opportunities in the community
  • Provide administrative support to the Marchman Chair for selected faculty engagement initiatives that advance dialogue and social action through courses and curricular programs
  • Perform other intentional duties that contribute to the University mission as assigned

Required Skills
  • Ability to communicate professionally with a variety of audiences, including current students, prospective students, community members, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to effectively supervise student, graduate, volunteer, and professional staff members
  • Ability to effectively facilitate small and large group discourse across multiple identities, including moving individuals/groups from a debate format to a discussion or dialogue format
  • Ability to plan events and programs, including coordinating facilities, food, parking, signage, housing, marketing, transportation, programming, entertainment, and risk management for small-scale programs lasting an hour up to large-scale summer camps for minors
  • Knowledge of national trends and best-practices for social action, dialogue across differences, community engagement, or non-profit management
  • Ability to use (or learn how to use) Microsoft productivity software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook
  • Support the University’s Mission and Values in their role

Required Experience
  • Master’s degree
  • Three years of experience in community engagement, counseling, dialogue facilitation, social justice, volunteer/internship management programs, or similar fields

Ideal Candidate Qualifications: The ideal candidate’s qualifications include:

  • Past experience planning trainings, workshops, and conferences, especially those that include advanced logistics such as housing, transportation, and vendor contracting

Work Environment: The work environment is a fast-paced office with a great deal of computer work and collaboration with students, staff, faculty, and community members. The employee may work a hybrid of remote and on-campus work with supervisor’s approval to ensure the needs of the department are met. This position will require occasional work in evenings and on weekends to execute programs that have been scheduled in advance, and arrangements will be made to ensure that comparable time can be taken off that same week.
