Known for its beautiful campus, world-class medical care, commitment to the arts and top athletic programs, Carolina is an ideal place to teach, work and learn. One of the best college towns and best places to live in the United States, Chapel Hill has diverse social, cultural, recreation and professional opportunities that span the campus and community.University employees can choose from a wide range of professional training opportunities for career growth, skill development and lifelong learning and enjoy exclusive perks for numerous retail, restaurant and performing arts discounts, savings on local child care centers and special rates on select campus events. UNC-Chapel Hill offers full-time employees a comprehensive benefits package, paid leave, and a variety of health, life and retirement plans and additional programs that support a healthy work/life balance.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) oversees, develops, supports, and grows UNC-Chapel Hill’s $1 billion research enterprise. The offices reporting to the OVCR set strategic priorities for research, manage proposals and awards, provide research infrastructure, identify funding opportunities, develop research teams and partnerships, oversee regulatory compliance, and communicate the impact and value of the University’s research enterprise. The OVCR enables research endeavors for faculty, students, and scholars; encourages interdisciplinary research collaboration across campus; and fosters expansion and diversification of the University’s sponsored research portfolio by collaborating with foundations, federal agencies, corporations, and the state and federal governments. The Vice Chancellor for Research also oversees multiple pan-University, multidisciplinary research centers and institutes.

The mission of IRMII is to develop a cutting-edge risk management and insurance research program that generates innovative solutions for mitigating many of the world’s most challenging financial risks. In doing so, IRMII’s goals are to serve the University, the state, and the world by sparking cross-disciplinary discussions, analyses, and research, while providing common areas for discourse with industry, developing space to nurture the ideas which emerge from these interactions, and supporting the translation of these intellectual advances into novel and implementable strategies for managing society’s increasingly complex financial risks.

Position Summary:

The Institute for Risk Management and Insurance Innovation (IRMII) is seeking a Director of Research. This individual will be critical to IRMII’s success and will work closely with IRMII’s Director as a part of the senior management team.

The IRMII was established in 2024 as a pan-campus, cross-disciplinary institute that fosters the development of solutions for managing the financial risks arising from a growing number of threats, ranging from extreme weather to cybersecurity. These risks are impacting North Carolina, the United States, and the world, and IRMII will generate novel research and solutions for managing these risks, while providing experiential opportunities for faculty, staff, and students, as part of a partnership with industry that will have broad impact. IRMII is a pan-campus organization that sits under the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Research (OVCR) and is designed to accomplish two primary objectives:
* the development of novel approaches to characterizing the sources and nature of society’s financial risks, and the subsequent formulation of innovative strategies and tools for effectively managing them;
* the achievement of these objectives through research collaborations among faculty and graduate students from schools across the University, working in concert with leaders from the risk management and insurance industries.

IRMII will facilitate knowledge transfer from the academy to industry, and students supported by IRMII will be trained to enter the workforce well-prepared to contribute to the rapidly expanding risk management and insurance sector. Research related to risk management requires the integration of knowledge and skills from a range of diverse fields, including engineering, natural sciences, business, economics, finance, data science, and policy. As such, IRMII will bring together researchers from across the UNC-Chapel Hill campus to provide students with multidisciplinary training that will prepare them for productive careers in a vitally important and evolving industry.

The size of IRMII’s research portfolio and funding requires the establishment of a dedicated Director of Research position. The Director of Research will assist in the design of IRMII’s research portfolio, while leading and managing day-to-day conduct of the research. This person will also play an important instructional role in the IRMII training program.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

- Experience related to the direction of applied research related to system-based analysis of various perils (e.g., drought, floods, infectious disease) and the assessment and management of related financial risks.
- At least five years of post-doctoral experience in either an academic or non-academic setting. Experience in communicating, interacting and collaborating with research scientists, as well as decision makers in the public- and/or private-sectors.
- Experience in communicating research results in both oral and written form is required, with the latter involving a record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

- Doctorate in engineering, natural sciences, economics, finance or related field is highly preferred, with a strong preference for individuals that have conducted multi-disciplinary research that crosses several fields.
- The ideal candidate should be able to build relationships with IRMII’s industry partners and communicate research findings and related recommendations. This position should also be able to build and maintain relationships with researchers inside and outside the University to source expertise necessary to support IRMII’s research mission.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
