Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week. The manager will confirm the team's core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.

The Office of Stewardship and Donor Engagement (SDE) seeks to engage and steward Johns Hopkins donors through meaningful activities that recognize their support of the institution and the positive impact of their philanthropy. Developing and maintaining a community of engaged donors is vital to the university and the mission of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR). SDE supports the engagement and stewardship of donors across the institution at the divisional level and as a central services bureau. SDE collaborates with a wide range of colleagues across Johns Hopkins University and Medicine, including ten schools.


The Senior Director of Stewardship and Donor Engagement leads a team that is responsible for the creation and execution of a comprehensive and strategic stewardship plan, annually and while in a comprehensive campaign. We strive to be a donor-centered team.

Staff Leadership and Strategic Planning

  • Provide leadership in the identification and implementation of strategies and programming for donors that will enhance stewardship, engagement, and ultimately giving.
  • Lead a team that is responsible for institutional stewardship and engagement of donors (includes managing and mentoring a team, staff recruitment, orientation, and performance management).
  • Manage all activities and opportunities related to institutional stewardship and donor engagement, including liaison with central DAR and Johns Hopkins University and Medicine development offices.
  • Create and deliver communications of key SDE projects and resources to internal stakeholders.

Personalized stewardship of top institutional donors:

  • Lead strategy and collaborate with key offices (including the President, the Sr. Vice President for DAR, the Board of Trustees, and Principal Gifts) to ensure the highest quality engagement and stewardship of university trustees and principal level donors ($5M+).
  • Direct the implementation of personalized stewardship plans including the management of a stewardship portfolio of institutional major donors.
  • Oversee the Founders Wall recognition program for donors of $7M+ to include personalized engagement for each Founders Wall donor, production of special events and communications, and prospect strategy for donors who are close to qualifying for inclusion on the wall. Work closely with the Johns Hopkins Facilities and Real Estate office (JHFRE) to plan and execute the construction of the Founders Wall expansion as needed.
  • Serve as editorial director and lead an internal creative team, external vendors, and/or partner with Development Communications to produce high quality stewardship deliverables such as videos, events, digital and printed pieces, etc.
  • Supervise the process to produce of high quality, timely gift acknowledgements by the President, the Sr. Vice President for DAR, and other institutional leadership, working closely Development Offices (DOFFS), Principal Gifts, and the Office of the President.

Management of the Personalized Stewardship Program

  • Provide resources and guidance to DOFFS to ensure the effective implementation of the program, consistency across the institution, and best practices in endowment stewardship and reporting, acknowledgements, donor recognition, naming opportunities, etc.
  • Develop, monitor and evaluate institutional stewardship metrics to help ensure participation in the personalized stewardship program, reporting on named funds, and other engagement activities.
  • Work with the Office of Advancement Services, Development Offices (DOFFS), Financial Aid, Admissions, Student Life, Finance, and the Trustees Office to implement updated policy and practices, particularly around reporting and tracking of endowed funds (scholarship and professorships), named spaces, and principal gifts.
  • Oversee the endowed professorship stewardship program, including the management of the professorship website (professorships.jhu.edu), guiding dedication and installation events, and highlighting best practices in reporting and engagement for faculty and donors.
  • Manage and facilitate the Donor Relations Liaison Group (DRLG) - a DAR staff group that meets quarterly to discuss opportunities and challenges related to stewardship, recognition and engagement, and to share best practice with colleagues.

Operations:

  • Develop and monitor an annual budget for stewardship and donor engagement
  • Maintain customer service via phone line and/or email to support the needs of our donors and to receive their critical feedback on our programs and service.
  • When Johns Hopkins University is in a comprehensive campaign, be prepared to operate in a campaign environment and engage and recognize donors as needed. Additional donor engagement programs may be formed and this position will be responsible for creating and maintaining these projects.
  • Write, develop and pull reports as needed to show progress or detailed information on the program or for a certain donor, or donor population.
  • Audit funds as needed and make adjustments based on findings.
  • Design and deliver effective presentations and training sessions for both internal and external audiences such as Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and the Association of Donor Relations Professionals (ADRP).


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Seven - ten years of experience in fundraising, donor relations/stewardship, volunteer engagement, events management or another relevant field.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the gift agreement process and fund administration.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, professionalism, and the ability to influence and work effectively with a wide range of people at different levels inside and outside the institution.
  • Creative and confident, flexible and a self-starter with the ability to lead and inspire others.
  • Strong client-service orientation, and attention to detail.
  • Experienced at supervising and leading staff and project teams.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication and presentation skills, including the ability to proof-read, edit and craft original, high-level correspondence and reports, and oversee other experienced writers and editors.
  • Proven ability to effectively and efficiently plan and manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment in situations requiring independent decision-making, and in handling confidential and sensitive material.
  • Proficient in MS Office and CRM use (Salesforce experience is desirable).
  • Experience in developing and implementing staff training courses related to fundraising, stewardship and engagement (or related fields) is desirable.
  • Willingness to travel and to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, when needed.
